Listen you, brother from another Sun Ra!No such thing as too out there!
I mentioned it a while back (or at least I meant to)...in any case, worth reiterating for those who might be interested. There is a Speakers Corner press of this one on the way, allegedly due in late March. Pre-orders up at The In Groove and the other usual suspects.one of my favorite's of Charles, not too out there
Good interview with him about this in the Record Store Day podcast a few episodes back.I know its not straight ahead Jazz but I've been a long time fan of the Black Radio albums by Robert Glasper, I think his latest in the trilogy is the strongest. It's a really wonderful album front to back, lots of beautiful energy captured within. Going to have to pick up that VMP press.
My local is charging $44 now for TP's.Looks like a couple of new Tone Poets are up for pre-order at the usual places (and at the now 'usual' prices ):
Gerald Wilson - Moment of Truth (Blue Note Tone Poet Series) LP
Born in Mississippi, Gerald Wilson spent formative years in Detroit before launching a celebrated career as a trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader. After moving to Los Angeles, Wilson signed with Pacific Jazz and in 1961 began a decade-long run of spectacular recordings including 1962ās...store.bluenote.com
Freddie Hubbard - Breaking Point! (Blue Note Tone Poet Series) LP
Despite having performed on several of the most revolutionary avant-garde jazz records of the 1960s, including Ornette Colemanās Free Jazz and John Coltraneās Ascension, Freddie Hubbardās own albums tended to hew closer to the mainstream. Perhaps no other single album captures the trumpeterās...store.bluenote.com
I think this is going to happen more tooā¦less supply from pressing plants so local shops will have to get better margins. The last few times Iāve gone to some local shops, their new shelves have been fairly empty. My local is charging $44 now for TP's.
It's a lovely pressing, if you don't mind that Chad/Universal don't bother to check the artwork. The correct catalog number, BTW, is A-30.early reports today are that the pressing is clean, flat, and remaster is gorgeous. I won't likely have mine for a few weeks as it will ship with some other things so enjoy early birds!
That seems like an intentional choice vs mistakeā¦the Philadephlia mistake was VMP sending the wrong file to the printers which is just classic disorganization for a graphic designer. Neither are ideal scenarios though. It's a lovely pressing, if you don't mind that Chad/Universal don't bother to check the artwork. The correct catalog number, BTW, is A-30.
With all the money Chad brings in, you would think he has enough people to check the artwork. This fuckup is much more obvious than Philadephlia, and I'm betting that Chad never fixes it and replaces it.
If the pressing is good, I could tolerate a departure on the album art. I mean, a departure on the Tone Poet of Gerald Wilsonās āMoment of Truthā might have even been welcome! It's a lovely pressing, if you don't mind that Chad/Universal don't bother to check the artwork. NPR also had an interview a few days ago.Good interview with him about this in the Record Store Day podcast a few episodes back.

I just point it out because people jump all over VMP for things like this but Chad gets a free pass. VMP fixes them. Chad won't.
Sure. But one is $30 and the other is $350. The VMP one is a bit more of a mystery because they spelled it correctly in all the mock-ups and promotional material, so they knew there was a spelling mistake at some point and just didnāt send the right files to the printer, then either sent it out without noticing or sent it out hoping people wouldnāt notice. It's a mistake.
