🚨BoomBoom alert! @MikeH

Cut from the master tapes.

Has anyone received any of these yet or had an updated release date? I have both Bookers on order with Amazon. They had them a great prices for pre-order but now is listed at OOS. Was originally supposed to ship end of August. Not worried just curious how they sound
I've had some from the first batch--Mingus and Otis Spann--that were supposed to be released in July on pre-order since April. They now say they'll be released in October. I'm not sure what's going on with this series. Amazon and Acoustic Sounds still list them as pre-orders, but clearly some copies of the Mingus have been released because there are reviews for that reissues on Discogs. And those reviews aren't promising. There seem to be a lot of pressing issues. I hope this isn't the BN75 series all over again--good mastering and notoriously bad pressing.

The only one that seems to have been widely released is Lightnin' in New York. The reviews of that one aren't quite as bad as those of the Mingus. So I haven't canceled my pre-orders just yet.

I've got the UK cut from the early 90s that I haven't listened to in forever....its such a mizell brothers masterpiece...im tempted for a Kevin gray cut probably takes some of the high end edge off...

Thanks, I saw those Mingus reviews as well and I a getting a bit nervous. Will probably keep the pre-order as the price was good. I wish there was a way to rate reviewers because some are so obviously on crack that I never want to see their comments again.

New Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf coming tomorrow morning. Per their teaser, Hammond organ will be heavily featured.

A ton of hyperbole in there, Gears I would hardy consider top shelf. A slick disco-ish glossy production affair, little to no heat. There are many, many more deserving and iconic titles in the Milestone catalog. Doesn't deserve the big FOMO windup of a 'drop'.

What’s weird is other than the Ra records, people are bidding on stuff that had plenty of solid reissues. Why not just buy them?
There's been plenty of times when I aim to get an OG over a reissue. In fact, to be honest, it's my preference most of the time. I would much rather have an OG Blue Note compared with a BN80 for example.

Sound quality aside, the idea that I'm holding something that is 70+ years old, which pre-dates me and my parents, and still sounds incredible blows my mind. Just thinking of the history behind it, the shop it came from originally, the various owners that have had it in their collection, etc, is really interesting to me.

The Sun Ra OG's are just on another level of collectability though. Most were DIY meaning each one is unique. A relatively small label with small pressing runs. Most of them will have been put together (ie paste-on covers or hand-coloured labels) by the Arkestra themselves, perhaps even Ra. Sure, it could be seen as a weird fetish but the same could be said with buying art, shoes, comic books, etc.

I get it to some point with the Ra albums. They are rare and an example of a unusual artist working extra hard to get his vision out into the world.

This type of collecting reminds me of a Phillip K Dick novel (I forget which one). But I’m the novel all the animals were robots because the natural ones were so rare. Only the rich could afford them. With records that added price for these albums are about the story behind them. I just don’t go in for that. Here’s this guys life obsession getting sold off. Be it that is not a bad thing. Hopefully the records go to people who love and listen to them as much as he did.

I completely agree that people with deep pockets are driving the price up, but that's one of the aspects of collecting (a term I try not to use because I always think it takes away from the actual music) records so compelling to me, the idea of finding these 'expensive' gems at a great price.

The Ra stuff really is a rich person's game typically. There are a few people I follow on Instagram that have mind-boggling collections of his music and they surely must be spending thousands of pounds/dollars on each record. Im fortunate enough to have a first pressing of The Magic City that I completely lucked out on and paid not much more than the cost of a new release, but if I was to seek out a specific title I just know it wouldn't be affordable to me.

I would be all over the deeper Ra stuff were I a richer man! But that's far from realistic. I'm casually seeking out the Impulse! pressings when I can, but even them I'm trying to keep to $50/60 if I can, but would be willing to go as high as $100 but for the most part I'd rather get 2-5 reissues I don't have for the same price point.

I agree with @Selaws though too about how holding the history even of a more mainstream OG pressing is a pretty cool feeling.
