If I had to guess, the by request is their attempt to offer a similar product as classics. Now whether or not 3rd man can be consistent is a whole other question. Would be nice to know sourcing.
I'm hoping it is. But Optimal is better than Third Man, and Blue Note master tapes are intact while Impulse and Verve are not, so as you say, knowing the source is important, and let's face it - if they are all AAA and decently mastered, they would be blowing that horn like crazy. Still, I am hoping.

Albums will be newly remastered from original analog sources, when available, and pressed on audiophile-quality, 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit. Each month, a limited Third Man Edition yellow color variant of each LP will also be available exclusively via Third Man Records and uDiscoverMusic. Each of the Third Man Editions will come in a limited edition, two-color, screen-printed jacket on archival French cover stock, custom printed and assembled in Detroit.

Very vague. The albums I’ve seen up for preorder all day from analogue tape transfers (AKA digital). Guessing that’s the case for all of these. Wish they would say if anybody notable cut them too but I’m guessing it’s not one of the big 4 guys or they would say it…I’m very cautiously optimistic for this series

However they turn out, I imagine Ptah will be an improvement on my bootleg so I'm pretty stoked. I can live with it not sounding as good as an original more than I can live with paying the going price for an original!

I mean the vital series was quickly squashed and some of those titles were released as part of the AS series. I would imagine that they are truly attempting at a classics level quality here. Third man can do good work, they are just inconsistent. It would be pretty asinine to basically repeat the sins of vital after seeing what Blue Note has done.

We do know that a lot of impulse and verve masters were lost in the fire, so I would imagine there are a lot of safeties and digital sources being used. Hopefully, high quality. I've preordered the first two (as I often do with these series) to gauge what it will be like. I definitely want Ptah and there are other titles in the initial release I would love to have so I hope it goes well.

These are priced higher than the vital were too, but that could be due to "vinyl inflation"

I hope you’re right. But the classics series is good because they are AAA and cut by KG. It will definitely be interesting to see who cut these. Im not against digital sourcing at all when it’s in the right hands. I’m always cautious when there’s no mention of who cut them considering that those names help sell records. ROG and Rhino similarly don’t give credit and those main guys all work for them so there’s some hope. I have Ptah on preorder for now

I'm most excited for Chicken Fat, but given the price these are launching at I'm hesitant to pre-order. I've had bad luck with Third Man. I'll probably break and pre-order one of them, but either way look forward to reading everyone's thoughts on them here.

I’d say you should have plenty of time to wait for reviews to come in. They seem to be widely distributed and I’m going to wait to order some others for a target or udiscover sale if they are good quality

I used to pre-order every TP and BN Classic as soon as they went on sale. I haven’t in about a year, and I’ve gotten every single one for significantly less via sales or general discounts. I will probably pre-order Ptah but will wait on the others.

this is good advice since Universal is distributing all these titles. Udiscover, Target and other stores that have pretty frequent sales will all carry these so they are bound to be part of a sale or drop on amazon at some point.

The Classic series are mostly AAA cut. Some are original digital masters. Same here with the Verve, as the Shorter and Hancock are both originally digital.

Hence, it is not necessarily vague to waffle a bit on source, but much remains to be revealed.

Jeff Parker live 2xLP. Produced by eremite. Insta-buy before even getting out of bed.

Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy-, x2 LPs of long-form, lyrical, groove-based free improv by acclaimed guitarist & composer Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet is at last here. Recorded live at ETA (referencing David Foster Wallace), a bar in LA’s Highland Park neighborhood with just enough space in the back for Parker, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Anna Butterss, & alto saxophonist Josh Johnson to convene in extraordinarily depthful & exploratory music making. Gleaned for the stoniest side-length cuts from 10+ hours of vivid two-track recordings made between 2019 & 2021 by Bryce Gonzales, -Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy- is a darkly glowing séance of an album, brimming over with the hypnotic, the melodic, & patience & grace in its own beautiful strangeness. Room-tone, electric fields, environment, ceiling echo, live recording, Mondays, Los Angeles. Jeff Parker's first double album & first live album, -Mondays at The Enfield Tennis Academy- belongs in the lineage of such canonical live double albums recorded on the West Coast as Lee Morgan’s -Live at the Lighthouse-, Miles Davis' -In Person Friday & Saturday Night at the Blackhawk, San Francisco- & -Black Beauty-, & John Coltrane's -Live in Seattle-.
