Jazz

I know a few of us got into Matana Roberts Coin Coin series of albums a few year back ( 4 have been released of a total of 12 albums reflecting on her family's history living as a black family in the USA ) They are all quite stunning and the records are all top quality, any way for any newer members or someone who is not aware of her here is a complete live performance of the Second Part Mississippi Moonshine to give you an idea of the beauty and passion of this remarkable artist.

Some bomb diggity drops today.

OJC Coltrane Lush Life is perfect. They nailed it on the OJC reissue.
This twofer Sonny Rollins Prestige is holy shit for $9 good.
Perfect vinyl and awesome. Jacket has some damage but vinyl is damn near NM. Silent

Saxophone Colossus is a $1500 sale on Cogs. Crazy jack!

Feelin The Spirit is getting a ton of positive feedback. Can't wait to spin it. Burrell is mono. Very cool for a TP release.20221027_213254.jpg

I’ve played Feelin’ The Spirit three times in the first week of having it. “Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho” sounded “in the room” good. They did an incredible job.

They need to just repress the entire Grant Green catalog as TPs.

is it weird i found Journey in Satchidananda to be an easier listen than A Love Supreme, a love surpreme just kinda in general slogged a bit more (do we need a bass solo) compared to Satchidananda where it felt like it wa going more immediately.. that might help me with figuring out more ways to get into the genre

I appreciate your courage in saying what you think, but I think we’ve found to origin of the bad takes thread. 😂

Seriously though, I get why Journey is more listenable. The forms of the songs as well as the solos are just simpler. And I’m not saying that is a bad thing. I love both albums for various reasons. Journey is much more peaceful and static. The variety of instruments keep your attention. it easy to follow. Sometimes we need a calm pool of water to sit and relax in.

A Love Supreme is a dense, expansive exploration of what is possible. It pushed you and pulls you. It’s overwhelming in is power. It’s like trying to keep up with professional athletes. So much is happening that us amateurs miss a lot. We just throw up our hands a give up breathless on the sidelines.

As for the bass solo? Are you talking about the intro to Resolution? It’s not even half a minute, and it’s one of the best parts of the album. It’s part of what distinguishes the album from a collection of songs (typical jazz record) and makes it more of a cohesive work of art. That bass plays a character in those moments. Calling everyone to prayer. It say everybody settle in and listen. Then after that the song just explodes. These are the interesting moments you don’t get with a standard jazz album.

No in referring to the outro of persuance, which about 2 and a half minutes of just pretty quiet bass (though maybe that is just an issue with my in ear headphones handling bass)... I think it's just one of those albums just not for me, I get the love but it's not for me

I mean not for nothing but is there such a thing as in ear headphones that are capable of producing the kind of sound reproduction that A Love Supreme dictates?

My problem with A Love Supreme is it doesn’t give me the life changing feels that others get from it. I enjoy listening to it very much. Think it is a great work.

I like that it’s a transition from the intensity of Pursuance to the serenity of Psalm.

Sad to hear that the legendary British pianist Terry Shannon has passed away.

Terry was part of Tubby Hayes & Ronnie Scott's "Jazz Couriers" and played with countless musicians over the years. He was actually one of the first to record on the Tempo label during the 'golden age' of British jazz alongside the likes of Dizzy Reece, Jimmy Deuchar, Victor Feldman, etc.

That's Terry in the middle.

rumor going around that New Land is doing a Dorothy Ashby box set that's cross-label and focusing on her early work...
Funnily enough Chris (What_Can_Brown) just put up a YouTube video and Instagram post sharing his copies of Ashby’s early releases. Maybe it’s a sign that he was in on it. Il send him a message.
