Not too long in most cases. The label hiring the mastering studio determines how much time is spent. He probably does one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

Back in the day, when these guys worked directly for the label, it would typically be an hour a side.

And suddenly I see Kevin Gray as a lazy guy. He could easily cut twice more records per year.

Thanks for the info.

Really, he's not. It is tough to move from one record to another and keep fresh ears. He presumably does want to keep up quality - his reputation, and $350 an hour rate, depends on it.

RVG would record, master and cut a lacquer in a morning! The Beatles would spend a day on mastering, and that includes arriving hours late, getting high, having arguments, passing out and leaving early.

When mastering from a digital file, it takes much less time - no setup, tape alignment, etc. - so cheaper to do.

For those who care, Record City JP has had some good stuff come in the last few days. A large OJC haul and, today, some sealed 60’s US/Impulse Coltrane. I grabbed the sealed ‘68 Impressions. I had about 15 items in my cart that have been waiting for a heavy hitter to motivate a purchase. I pared the cart down to 4 other items and added Impressions. All five shipped to the US for $17, and the average cost of the other four items was $12. Between the exchange rate and RCJP’s unbelievably cheap shipping, there are amazing deals to be had from Japan right now. Every item I purchased would have been more expensive in the US.

Fingers crossed that a sealed ‘68 record isn’t a total mess of noisy paper scuffs. 🤞🤞🤞

i'd be a little hesitant to buy OJCs now that Concord is resurrecting the series unless the price is great on them! They have already said they are doing some Yusef Lateef, Bill Evans, Coltrane, Mal Waldron and a bunch of other artists.

Weren’t these VMP exclusives? Glad to see them widely available now.

Doubt it. These are very wide release though.

Edit: VMP didn’t even know these were coming out

It was more with the idea of taking profit of free shipment and possible bundle price but yeah, I bought the oldest records from this serie directly from European sellers.
