Jazz

Wayne Shorter has passed away.

Totally devastating news. Such an incredible musician.

Man, this one really hurts. My favorite living jazz musician and maybe my favorite composer ever. RIP doesn’t begin to describe it

A few things this morning.

Firstly, its been incredible seeing all the love online for Wayne Shorter, sometimes coming from people/places that I didn't even realise were influenced by him, really incredible.

Theres always some chancers though and I noticed a few of his records popping up in my discogs wantlist email, some of which were priced at £700. Hard to imagine Wayne would have appreciated that.

Finally, Nat Birchall released an incredibly limited number of test pressings this morning on his Bandcamp. I was refreshing the page because I knew they were coming and was lucky enough to get "Live At Larissa" which I have been wanting for a while. I was hoping for Akhenaten or Sacred Dimension but I literally refreshed, they appeared, with the 'sold out' status. So they went super super quick AND they were priced at £50 and £100 respectively.

The passing of Wayne Shorter is like the end of a golden era of jazz. There are now very few musicians from this generation :(

About Akhenaton, they say it will be repressed later this year : Black vinyl copy of the Akhenaten LP on the JAZZMAN label from 2016. Old stock. ***ONLY 1 COPY PER PERSON!!!*** PLEASE NOTE - This album will be repressed later this year, this is for collectors only! ;) ONLY 4 COPIES AVAILABLE

Completely agree. I was supposed to see Ron Carter live last year for the London Jazz Festival but he had to cancel due to ill health. Usually, the festival has 1 'legend' that headlines and in the past this has included Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, Archie Shepp, etc. Makes you wonder who they are going to get as a 'legend' 10 years from now....

I told my wife and she didn't know who he was, which is interesting, because I play him all the time because he is easy top five jazz sax players for me. Probably in my top 20 jazz artists ever.

There will be other legends but maybe we won't see them the same way we see these 50/60/70s jazz legends. I can see Shabaka Hutchings, Makaya McCraven, Robert Glasper or Kamasi Washington reaching this status of legends in the next decades.

I'm routing a flight to see Chales Lloyd play at The Lobero next Friday (10 Mar) because I love his playing...and these opportunities a seem so fleeting. It is an 85th Birthday celebration for him.

I'm am incredibly excited though for the next generation. There are some great minds, composers, and great players in Jazz right now. The Era is different, and more fragile, the financial returns and press less strong (which, let's all go see live this generation of musicians...and tip your waitress, buy the record), but the music in NY, Chicago, London, or Ibiza, Prague, LA. It's there. Let's go.

RIP Wayne Shorter. Here is to one of the greatest.

Enjoy Charles Lloyd! I saw him in 2021 along with the British group, Nerija, and he was staggeringly good.

Chuck Mangione for sure! Abolute Legend!!

Joking aside, I actually once bought his 1972 live album “Alive!” solely bc it has Tony Levin on bass (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, many others). It also has Steve Gadd on drums. It’s pretty good! Allmusic even gives it 4.5 stars

It's a constant evolution. The next Legends will be the Young Lions of the 80s (Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Mark Whitfield et al.) plus folks like Pat Metheny and John Scofield. Then in 10-15 years it'll be artists who were at their artistic peak in the 90s (Josh Redman, Brad Mehldau, John Lurie, John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Medeski, Martin & Wood), than as mentioned, in 20 years it'll be Shabaka Hutchings, Makaya McCraven, Robert Glasper and Kamasi Washington.

Just bought tickets to see Lloyd’s 85th birthday concert in LA. He’ll be playing with Frisell.

Craft coming into 2023 strong. These are from the Target sale last Nov.

Just played the 4 disc Lockjaw and it is superb!
Also, delivering the Lockjaw within 24hrs of his birthday is quite a nice touch for the street release.

Playing my replacement copy of Black Orpheus tonight.
