Jazz

Seeing as we are chatting about King / Toshiba pressings, from the top of my head I have:

John Jenkins With Kenny Burrell on King
Milt Jackson (the S/T with a ton of musicians in the title) on King

and

Tina Brooks - True Blue on Toshiba
Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - At The Jazz Corner Of The World on Toshiba

There's a noticeable audio difference with the King pressings (the John Jenkins is superb) over the Toshiba, but even then I would say that the Toshiba's are above average. They are certainly worth picking up if you can find them at a reasonable price, especially if they are records where the originals are crazy prices.

With VMP announcing the next batch of their Prestige series on friday, I wondered what peoples wish list for it is? Im hoping they will be some of the more obscure stuff, although I realise this isn't likely from a marketing perspective. I would like to see:

Yusef Lateef - Other Sounds (Eastern Sounds would be better but its on Moodsville - a subsidiary of Presige, would that count?)

Hank Mobley ‎– Mobley's Message

Red Garland, All Mornin Long (Early Coltrane on sax)

Mal Waldron ‎– Mal/3 Sounds (I have been after one of Mal Waldron's early records for a while, this would be an interesting pick - highly unlikely though).

John Coltrane With The Red Garland Trio (Another early Coltrane with Paul Chambers on Bass)

I recently picked up a reissue of the Thelonious Monk Trio as well and it slaps so hard! Even though I have a copy I think this would be a superb pic!

My wish was that they would release stuff that wasn't just different colored versions of stuff that is already readily available. Turns out this is not to be. Prestige is looking like the worst of their jazz label partnerships so far, as far as my interests go.

Do we know what the next couple are yet? Apparently they are releasing them today. Im actually not too disheartened by their pick of Saxophone Colossus. Its widely available through reissues but its not a bad pick, its a great album (one of Rollin's best IMO).

I think we have to accept the fact that when VMP collaborate with labels like this it isn't for the die-hard fan of that label, but a 'best-of' in order to help people become familiar with the label.

Edit: Also I have just noticed that the VMP - Prestige write up references 'Etta Jones, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis'. Now we have the Rollins so im going to assume Jones and Davis will be next.

Edit Edit: I've caught up on the Store thread now

I am fine that the Prestige titles are not deep vault releases, it is the quality of the pressings, especially for the price. I will probably pick up the Dolphy at some point, especially if it makes it to swaps for Septembers ROTM. Like I said in another thread, VMP set the bar quite high with the 4 Blue Note releases and the Prestige ones just feel tossed off.

I love how in the first sentence of the announcement of these next two titles, they choose to highlight the fact that the Sonny Rollins title sold out in a week 😂 Fomo marketing strikes again.

I don't mind either of these picks, at least they aren't as uninspiring as Saxophone Colossus (it's an incredible album, but has been reissued to death at this point). However, both probably come from digital masters and will be pressed at Rainbo.... Yikes

Please do yourself a favour, if you really want either of these records and hop over to discogs. Early pressings of the Etta Jones are fairly cheap or you could grab an OJC from the 80s. Early pressings of Dolphy are expensive, but the OJC's from the 80's are not.

The fifth release in the BBE Music J Jazz Masterclass Series has the perfect combination of rarity and exceptional musicality that inspires seasoned collectors to break out in a sweat. Animals Garden by Miyasaka + 5 was originally issued in 1979 on the cult private Japanese label ALM and is reissued for the first time on LP and CD.

Animals Garden was a one-off project led by master drummer Takashi 'Bear' Miyasaka and features a powerful and progressive jazz group including saxophonist Kōichi Matsukaze, whose Earth Mother album has also been reissued by BBE Music. The four extended tracks on Animals Garden exemplify the high standard of playing and arranging that was a characteristic of jazz composed and recorded in Japan during the late 1970s. All four numbers were composed by Miyasaka and the album spans a range of styles, from febrile post-bop and head nodding modal, to deep funky blues and elegiac balladry. The title track was included on J Jazz Volume 2, but the three remaining cuts are equally enchanting.

As ever, Animals Garden is issued with an exact reproduction of the original artwork, translated original notes plus brand new sleeve notes. The vinyl album is presented in a deluxe thick card gatefold sleeve with reproduction obi strip, spread across two LPs cut at 45rpm for superb sound quality.

BBE Music's J Jazz Masterclass Series is curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden and is dedicated to presenting the very finest in modern jazz recorded in Japan from a 'golden period', the late 1960s to the mid-1980s.

Obbbbbbbviously this is getting ordered. I wonder if its worth waiting to see where else stocks it. £25 for 2 45RPM records is a decent price though to be fair, especially if it matches the quality of the others in the the J-Jazz Masterclass series.

Euro mates, the last album from Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah is currently available from Amazon.fr for 24.99€ preorder, way more reasonnable than the price and shipping from the US on his bandcamp :

Ill Considered is back for more, with the 8th installment in their discography in like 2 years ? They promise better shipping and delays, and are even joking about it because the last track is called "Sorry your parcel didn't arrive" :D

Also, 2 runs this time, coloured, green or yellowish orange. Only one track streaming without ordering the record but streaming the rest right now and it's as good as we've been used to from them.

Ordered the yellow version, last chance, hopefully orders will come through with a quiet record this time.

I was looking through my record pile last night, picking out a handful to play, and I realised I had inadvertently hit a target I was aiming for.

I went for the yellow as well. Lets just hope they have their quality control sorted.

Just going through Juno and looks like there's a new Ashley Henry supposedly already out next week Ashley HENRY Beautiful Vinyl Hunter vinyl at Juno Records. and the Ronin Arkestra album is coming at the end of September RONIN ARKESTRA Sonkei vinyl at Juno Records. (Ronin has sound clips too and sounds great)
1. Your killing my wallet here.
2. I recently read an interview with Ashley Henry where 'Beautiful Vinyl Hunter' was mentioned, cant for the life of me remember where I saw it.
3. Damn, Ronin Arkestra are killing it! The preview is great!

Contact them and get them to send you another one and tell them that it’s too expensive and not worth it to send back. And tell them to put it in A Box!!
Wish I'd picked the VMP version of this up. Got the OJC version sent to England from Amazon.com in a Jiffy bag :(

You can see someone's footprint imprinted on the record wrapper
