Jazz

I've seen a few of these listed recently, largely made up of the Coltrane Prestige catalogue, Art Pepper, Wes Montgomery, a few others I think. They're priced around £26 which is a big improvement on the OJC reissues which have been pretty expensive over here.

On that btw, @Selaws and other UKers, it looks like Craft have reopened their UK web store and the OJCs seem quite a bit cheaper on here than I've seen them in other stores. They also have a 10% reduction on 2 LPs ordered, 15% for 4.

Ooooh thanks for sharing, I didn't know about their UK store!

Show 2 of the London Jazz Festival for us proved sadly, to not exactly be my cup of tea. Sam Gendel and Philippe Melanson nearly lost me in the first 30 as they did what I can only assume was an ironic take on ‘tuning up’ their electronic instruments before transitioning into a nursery rhyme piece that belonged ‘In the Night Garden’. They came around a bit with something more akin to actual music rather than just sound but, there seemed to be so much sequencing and programming involved that it was hard to distinguish what really constituted ‘live’ music. I’m not so old that I can’t appreciate the skill in sequencing etc but as a live music event, it leaves me somewhat cold. I also got a bit bored of Gendel’s electronic saxophone sounding like an old English lute, a Funkadelic style noodling guitar, a vocal scatter (nobody enjoys real vocal scatting for fucks sake!) thanks to the massive programming support of his Apple laptop. I get it, you’re an almost multi-instrumentalist. Oh well, must do my research better in future.

Sorry to hear that @Mr Moore, very frustrating.

I have to admit that I've not signed up to as much this year as I usually do but I am hoping to go to the Ron Carter gig later in the week (which was delayed from last year).

Damn, that Go West! box is absolutely beautiful but listening to BGs cut on side 1 of WOW.

Just amazing. His tube console is a thing of beauty! He's the GOAT!
My 80s OJC sounds like dried jerky in comparison to this souffle.
I believe the consoles at BGM are solid state. There are both SS and tube amps/preamps feeding the consoles, in different engineer's rooms.

Lol. Good to hear bc I’m replacing my 1988 OJC with this, and I like how the ‘88 sounds. Discogs comments suggest that what you’re characterizing as “dried jerky” is a more “forward” and preferable presentation in a narrower sound field.

I generally lean towards warmer cuts, so I suspect I’ll prefer this BG version over the OJC, but I’m gonna find out soon enough.

Really cool you can do a similar comparison.
I look forward to your feedback.

The OJC is shallow. Sharp around the edges, very little bass presence. But it's organic, live sounding so I can appreciate both.

But if I have to choose..... BG is so yummy good to the ears.

To me it's obvious on the needle drop, but everyone has their own take.
Let us know what you think!

DON'T SPEAK FOR ME!!! I only have @RHANDMJ's takes!!!

I had the pleasure of seeing Ron Carter perform live last night with his Foursight group, as part of the London Jazz Festival. It was at the fantastic Cadogan Hall and was my first time visiting the venue.

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The whole group was incredible and Ron was full of humour and energy, chatting to the audience, making witty statements, and showering his group with praise.
