Jazz

All this talk of Tolliver has me amazed that I bought the Mosaic Select with all of this music (and the previously unreleased Slug's material) in 2005. 20 years sure flew by. Thank you for your posts about the reissues. The CDs sound great so I am curious whether I need to engage in double dipping.

Anyone pick up the new Branford Marsalis Quartet or Nels Cline's Consentrix Quartet records? I recently took delivery of both and they are terrific. Jarrett is a long time love of mine so it's nice to see someone with the huevos to take on the masterwork that Belonging is. This new group from Nels has a lot of compositions that cover a great deal of ground and I am always thrilled to hear Tom Rainey. That guy's work with Tim Berne alone is stupendous, but he seems totally inspired these days due to his relationship with Ingrid Laubrock (who plays tenor here).

One of the Nels Cline tracks autoplayed on Spotify earlier when the album I was listening to finished and it was really good. I don’t remember the track name but I’ll definitely be checking out the full album when I get a minute.

If you’re happy w the CDs and don’t feel some urgent need to have Slugs on vinyl, there’s no need to double dip that I can see. Meyond that, my specific thoughts about Slugs KGs and my previous copies are above so wont repeat them.

you guys seen this

next level nerd shiz on Contemporary Records - personally I think leaving the 'Place' off of melrose is a dead giveaway for someone who's isn't from or familiar with Los Angeles and is unforgivable because Melrose Place is where Contemporary lived, but this guys got some web design chops and goes deep...LJC you just got served.

sidenote: unaffiliated and cannot vouch for accuracy etc...in fact I've already seen some stuff that may be wrong or just not well enough researched

I’d seen this and it’s pretty intense but interesting for anyone who wants to nerd out. I’m sure the SHF types and others will have a field day telling him what needs to be corrected, so hopefully he’ll have errors/problems ironed out by the cruel open market over time.

As for the lack of “place” and his LA ties, fwiw, somewhere buried in his massive “about me” page is the claim that his fascination started around the time he lived a mile north of Contemporary’s location. But I agree that it’s weird bc I have always assumed “melrose” by itself is a refernce to Melrose Ave. I’ve never lived in LA but have been there and driven all over a bunch.

Speaking of nerd shiz, after reading your post, I theorized that the .com domain name with “place” was already registered/owned by someone else when he came up w the idea for the site and, perhaps, that drove the decision not to use “Place” in the name. But that’s not the case. He registered the domain he’s using in 2023, and the same .com domain with “place” at the end was not registered until 2024. Both are through Squarespace Domains so maybe he owns both now. The .com domain w “pl” abbreviation at the end is still available.

melrose place actually is a separate street - and that's actually what makes it cool that Contemporary was there - its tiny only a few blocks long, now filled with high fashion and high end food/bev - but anyone who's from/knows LA would want to make the distinction as Melrose Ave can take you miles from mid city through downtown and is incredibly varied and cool, yet not the unique little pocket that Melrose Place is.

and hate to say this because it makes me sound old (ok I'm old).... but it reads like a chatgpt fart and wikipedia research prompt - I have to say it every day at my work, 'play don't publish' and 'use your own voice' - reminds me of that kid that Fremer loves who was like 12 years old writing record reviews...and I really do love the passion and 'otaku' nature of all of it, but at the end of the day your voice has to come from experience...
