July 2019 Vinyl Challenge

Day 24: Label

Junior Parker - Love Ain't Nothin' But A Business (Groove Merchant Records - 1971)

This album got on the radar of many in the Hip Hop community after DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill sampled Junior's cover of The Beatles', "Tax Man" in 1993 for "I Wanna Get High." But, it's a fine record all the way through. Seriously Funky, Soulful Blues. Groove Merchant was also heavy on some 70's Jazz Funk, a genre I totally love!

Day 22 - Colorful

I have much, much more colorful records than La Cucaracha (its a marbled Brown); however, this album is quite “colorful” in how all over the place it is as well. But that’s Ween for ya.

Paintin’ the town brown!

Day 24 - Label

I think before this year I’ve never really been obsessed with one label in particular, but man 2019 has been the year of tBlue Note for me. It’s like a drug, so intoxicating and so addicting but the label really churned out some of the best jazz titles of all time.

And I can’t seem to get enough of it.
(just put in a preorder for 5 more titles today)

For this selection, thought I’d go with one of the more recognizable and renowned titles in the Blue Note cannon. “Moanin’” very well might be the best hard bop song, imo.

Day 24: Label

There's a lot out there that I could have gone with....Brain for those rare German prog bands. Mondo/Waxwork for my soundtrack obsession.

But I'm going with The Company - I'm sure it was @Enaz Fox that first got me started with recommending this record.

Hyborian ‎– Vol. I
The Company ‎– THECO-003, 2017

Blue/Black Merge "Aqueous Nebula" Edition - limited to 100 copies

24: Label

Could have gone a few different ways here, but I'll go with my hometown label, Arts & Crafts, home to tonnes of my favourite artists like Feist, Timber Timbre, Fucked Up, Broken Social Scene, and others. Playing a couple records for this one. Sadly their pressings normally don't sound great, especially for my favourite Feist record, Metals, so I'll start with the mostly fantastic VMP version of Let It Die.

Feist - Let It Die

Timber Timbre - Creep On Creepin' On

Is this a good affordable pressing? Ive wanted the music matters or AP ones, but not $100+ want

I caught up just to immediately fall even further behind. Oh well!

Day 13: Cleaning

I like music I can sing along with when I clean. As long as it isn't too too mellow, just about any singable album is good cleaning music for me.

Ingrid Michaelson - Girls and Boys

Day 24: Label
Dem Atlas-Bad Actress

Rhymesayers is a label I follow very closely. Being in the northern midwest also gives me a lot of chances to catch these artists live as they play a lot of shows together up here. This being one of my favorite albums of last year.View attachment 12282
I really need to give this album another chance. Love Dem and I think I went in with DWNR expectations for this album. There’s still a few tracks I play on the regular though.
Midwest represent! ✊

And regarding Moanin’—the King pressings are really nice, but it’s the shipping that jacks them up. This VG+/NM- copy was around $40 but the $15 shipping from Japan really jacked it up. They are really nice presses for the price point and are somewhat universally revered by those who have them. Finding one within the US would be helpful.
