July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

Day 20: METAL

I was a teenage metalhead back when the CD was king. My taste would probably be considered wimpy by today’s standards. My bread and butter was traditional 70s/80s heavy metal (Sabbath, Deep Purple, Maiden, Judas Priest) and some thrash and power metal. I never got into death and the only black metal I ever delved into was the more commercial stuff like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

My pick for today’s challenge is an album I was happy to see reissued on vinyl. Reminds me of hanging around in my bedroom playing with D&D cards by myself (I was super cool, you see). Tbh I don’t think it’s quite a masterpiece but I was definitely vibing earlier with some of the deeper cuts like “Thorn.” And Hansi Kürsch is one of the best vocalists I’ve ever heard:

21 - Hip to the Hop

Thankfully, this is a genre I have some records to really choose from unlike say, metal. However, this was about the only one on the listening shelf. Still, not only is it a sheer joy to spin but it also has the wife seal of approval. Banger after banger awaits the listener here. Also, found another tipper sticker!

ps I waffled on whether this qualifies as hip hop. I think under today’s interpretation of the term it does. It certainly has a few genuine hip hop moments but overall it’s more of a high energy r&b album. It‘s definitely pop and definitely soul and is largely about dancing I think. But whatevs, I could drag out Jurassic 5, Dan the Automator, De la Sou, or any number of other tired, dyed in the wool perfect representations if I had to. Let’s do something fresh.

I WANT TO BELIEVE
Play something that makes you think of aliens 👽

White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music vol. 1

Spacemen. Martians. Aliens. Cosmic Creatures from beyond the Galaxy. This album reminds me of it all. Not to mention ghouls, monsters, classic cars, depraved humans, undead.....if it's a trope of horror and sci-fi it's in here. The lyrics are dense in this one, to say the least.

You start the album in a spaceship crash and being welcomed to planet motherfucker, and continue on to come face to face with a cosmic spider, a ford mustang, the Omegaman, grim ghastly ghouls, the dogs of the soul-crusher, and mutliple damsels not-quite-in-distress.

The entire lyrical content of this one is like being stuck in the mind of a science fiction writer from the 50's on an acid trip.

well, I am the one....a god with a gun....well, I am Legend!

METAL MONDAY
Play a metal (or metal-adjacent) album

Screamer - Hell Machine

Here's some NWOBHM for everyone. A band that rips, shreds, slays, slashes, gashes and mashes. All the adjectives when you hear fast power metal from Europe....it's them. The thing about Screamer is they never let up. On Side B of this album you'll think you're getting a bit of respite, but then the guitars come chugging in again. This is sing-along 80's-by-way-of-2000's metal of the highest order.

I'm on my way. Like a beast breaking out of it's cage!

Day 20 - Metal Monday, play a metal out metal-adjacent album

Faith No More - Angel Dust

Not a lot of metal in this collection. We'll go with one of my favorite bands that really dove me to a deeper love of music. Although they do have lots of metal moments, and did play with a bunch of metal bands.

METAL MONDAY (on a Tuesday)
Play a metal (or metal-adjacent) album 🤘

Sannhet - Revisionist

Pummeling instrumental post-metal. Also- I have an extra copy of this one due to the label accidentally mailing me two, and nobody wanted it in the PIF thread, so if anyone wants me to mail them a free copy, let me know!

Day 21 - HIP HOP HOORAY

Saba ‎– Bucket List Project (Omerta Inc, 2017 First Coloured Pressing No. 015/300)

When I bought this back in 2017 I was just interested in showing some support for a local label. They released a few records on their newly launched website and I bought 3. I was actually completely unfamiliar with Saba at the time but enjoyed this album when it arrived. I actually emailed them at the time as there is an additional track at the end which is not included in the track listing, and their response was that it was something which Saba purposely did for some reason. Crazy to see how its shot up in value, not something I would have expected, not that its not a fantastic album though.

POETRY IN MOTION
Play an album with great lyrics

Ralph McTell -- You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here

A fantastic folk album. I'd never heard of him and I just took a shot on this album at my LRS. Genesis I verse 20 and First and Last Man are good tracks to start if you're interested!

Meco -- The Wizard of Oz

Instead of picking the low-hanging fruit of U.F.O. by Jim Sullivan... Kind of a gag, but no one on this planet could have conceived a disco version of the Wizard of Oz 🦁

METAL MONDAY
Play a metal (or metal-adjacent) album 🤘

Faus -- Apestate

Probably more hardcore than metal (that's adjacent right?). I got this in a Blackhouse Records mystery bag and I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did.
