DAY 21
HIP HOP HOORAY
Little Simz - GREY Area
Had a few different ones I was considering for this one but decided to use this as an excuse to pull out a favorite from last year that I haven't listened to in a while. This album is amazing but I actually listened to it so much when it came out I kind of got sick of it lol. That's my own fault and not really a reflection on the album itself. Little Simz is a superstar and this album cements that status in my mind. It's such an impressive piece of work on pretty much every level, her skills and flows can be very awe-inspiring at times. The beats on here also compliment her style very well.
Full disclosure, I knew I was going to be out of town with no table so I pre listened and photoed in advance. Since I’m under quite the duress this evening and I have to somehow act like I can work despite it tomorrow I’m pretending I am in another time zone and it’s already tomorrow. A) because I deserve it thanks to the shit day today and B) because I have a feeling this one could get snatched and I have no backup since I’m separated from my records.
DAY 22
CHILL OUT
Mac DeMarco - This Old Dog
I'm not sure why but this album hits me in a way that none of Mac's other albums do. There's songs I like here and there from his other records but This Old Dog is on another level (no pun intended). It's a great chill album but it's got an emotional center to it the rest of his work doesn't convey to me. He strikes me as someone who seems to easily fall into self-parody but I think this album is genuinely great. I played the shit out of this album freshman year of college but haven't broke it out in a while... is it weird to feel nostalgic for a time that was just three years ago?
The Complete Pacific Jazz Studio Recordings Of The Chet Baker Quartet With Russ Freeman (Mosaic Records, 1987 Limited Mono Box Set)
Decided to listen to some of that cool west coast jazz for today. Chet's impressive at the best of times, but I personally think his recordings with Russ Freeman are his best.
I think Denzel Curry is one of the hottest and most exciting artists in Hip Hop in recent years. This is his 2015 mixtape. Sounds great.
July 22nd
Chill Out
I've decided to pick "Jinx" by Crumb. Not a typical chillout album, but the instrumental passages on this record are really beautiful, very dreamy and kind of relaxing to me.
Not sure I have a more relaxing album, just don't get tired of this one. Rolling into Grant Green's Sunday Mornin now, and this is one laid back morning.
