July 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge: Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine

July 4 - I’m so Bored with the U.S.A.

I had to work Sunday night, so I didn't really do much for the 4th this year. Fireworks weren't too bad from what my wife told me. The recent heatwave and dryness and the fear of fires like we had last year kept people from firing too many off.

David Gilmour ‎– David Gilmour
CBS/Sony ‎– 25AP 1077, 1978

Japanese pressing

His cover is better than the original version, IMO

And the original version...from the 1976 Unicorn album "Too Many Crooks", which Gilmour produced.

July 5 - Interconnected day 1
Over the next 3 days play records that are connected somehow (don’t be lazy and play 3 albums by the same band, unless it was part of a trilogy)

Jane's Addiction ‎– Nothing's Shocking
Warner Bros. Records/Rhino Records ‎– RCV1 25727, 1988/2017

Limited to 6000 copies on clear vinyl

July 8 - Once in a lifetime.
Play a record by an artist that you feel lucky to have seen perform live

This was hard. Too many years, too many shows. Too many bands I've been lucky enough to see one time.

Narrowed it to AC/DC w/Bon Scott, Warren Zevon, Talking Heads, Ramones, Iggy Pop and these guys...

The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope

R.E.M. "Monster" (1994 Warner Brothers; 2019 Craft reissue)
I saw R.E.M. live during the Monster tour on June 15 1995 at the Montreal Forum. Last event I attended at the Forum before it's demolition. They played one of the best balanced setlists I've seen, peaking every 3-4 songs for over almost three hours. It was also trippy how Michael kept removing his t-shirt and always had another underneath. He must have started the show with 7-8 shirts on.

July 7 - Interconnected day 3

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

Rhino Records - R1 76156F, 1988/2004

From the Limited-Edition Vinyl Box Set

Is the connection that all 3 albums were originally released in 1988? You coulda went with an “electricity” theme if ya spun Ride The Lightning as your Metallica album selection.

Day 08: Once in a lifetime
Play a record by an artist that you feel lucky to have seen perform live

Dave Matthews Band - Live At Red Rocks 8.15.95

For better or worse the Dave Matthews Band was “the band” for me and my group of friends growing up. They were the type of band that was popular with the Jocks and the Burnouts alike and since I was a Burnout Jock it was the music that I could play regardless of the group of friends I was hanging out with. Needless to say I’ve seen them live a lot…

There was probably another half dozen or so tickets that never made it back home. I doubt I will ever go to another DMB show at this point as none of their recent music does anything for me and I would rather go see a band I haven’t seen live like 20 times but I am grateful for shows I did see as they were always a memorable experience.

Same here. Saw them over a dozen times back in the day. While I liked Big Whiskey well enough nothing has really captured my ear since they scraped The Lillywhite Sessions. That boot still reigns supreme. But probably won't see them again unless/until I get older and more nostalgic for my youth.

I always enjoyed DMB well enough but not so much to get any of their albums or be too inclined to see them, but wound up at their Golden Gate Park 2004 show because the two friends I was travelling with really wanted to check it out (my big deal was the Power to the Peaceful fest the day before.) It was a fan appreciation show that tickets were only a $10 handling fee for, but "sold out" everywhere by the time we were there and knew it was happening - we managed to score 3 tickets for $20 the morning of and it wound up being one of the best live shows I'd ever been to at that point - and still in my top 10-15. So glad we wound up there.

Since I am still waiting (im)patiently to see the Tallest Man on Earth (it got pushed back all the way from May 2020 to March 2022 so I still have a while) and I already played Phoebe Bridgers once this month I thought I would talk about this one:

My cousin's girlfriend used to work for the city of Bethlehem, PA doing marketing for events. One of the perks was she would get comp tickets to Musikfest to give out, for my birthday one year she gave me third row seats to Father John Misty. I know he's kind of a love it or hate it musician, but I had a lot of fun. It was the first concert I had been to in a long time and it definitely made me want to go to a bunch more. Also, it seemed fitting to play a live album for this prompt.

Saw Tallest Man on Earth in 2019 and it was an absolutely incredible show. Trust me, it’s going to be worth the wait.
