Beck - Odelay

My dad was a big fan of Beck (mostly of his zanier records) so when Beck came to town, my dad bought eight tickets that were available the day of the show through his work. He called me up to gather some friends to come with us. Of course being last minute, no one else could make it so it was just my dad and me freezing our butts off on the lawn of the White River Amphitheater but we had a lot of fun. I think it was the only time I ever went to a show with my dad.

Lee Morgan "The Rumproller" (1965 Blue Note)
I was able to pick up a few old Blue Note pressings for a good price at my Montreal locals during the late 90's. This is one of them. The original inner is present but badly seam split, the vinyl is full of scuffs and small scratches, but it still plays loud and beautiful despite the pops and clicks in certain parts. This copy seems to be the original 1965 stereo pressing based on Discogs. Nice!

Black Sabbath - Vol. 4

View attachment 105239

My nearly-four-year-old's original Canadian pressing is older than the two of us put together!

What a coincidence. I don't own many heavy records, but curiously, I was actually looking to get a decent pressing of this last night to round out my collection a bit. I noticed that there is a AAA Chris Bellman Rhino from 2011 that's well regarded but goes for over $100 (for a Rainbo pressing no less?). Still looking...

Been dealing with a student who complained to the dean that I wouldn't accept their late work (after final exams!), I actually argued on their behalf with the school to take it because they only needed this class to graduate and then discovered they had copied it off the internet. So they still failed and are mad at me about it. So it felt like a good day to spin this classic.

Johnny Paycheck - Take this job and shove it. (1977) original pressing I found at an estate sale in great shape.

Also if you haven't watched Mike Judge's Tales from the Tour Bus series yet, the first episode is on Paycheck and is hilarious. Intro clip below. Worth the couple bucks to stream it.

Buck Owens & His Buckaroos - I’ve Got A Tiger By The Tail (Original Scranton Pressing, 1965)

When I first started exploring Country & Western music in earnest Buck and the “Bakersfield Sound” he popularized was one of the first artists and styles that really connected with me. It was unapologetically traditional (which was outside the “Countrypolitan” Nashville Sound that was popular at the time) To me Buck Owens made Country music the way I had always imagined it would sound.

St. Vincent - Daddy's Home

A long time ago, in a state far, far away, my wife and I went to a tiny venue to see John Vanderslice. The opening act was St. Vincent, before she'd put out her first album, so she was a total unknown to us. She performed solo, just her guitar, a couple of mics, and some stomping. Her performance and guitar skills left us amazed, and I have been a fan ever since. The venue was so small that she was just a few feet from us and the "stage" was just a foot or two higher, and I feel lucky to have seen her perform in such a small, pre-fame setting.
