June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Wednesday (10) – Puberty – gosh parents, your music sucks, did you rebel? Play an album that takes you back to those teenage years.

Warrant- Cherry Pie

When I was in high school my musical tastes varied between new wave/alternative, the pop giants (Prince, Madonna, Huey Lewis, etc) and hair metal. Whenever I wanted to rebel and blast music from my bedroom? Definitely hair metal.

This album doesn’t hold up very well but there are still a few gems including Uncle Tom’s Cabin and I Saw Red.

Polaris - Music from The Adventures of Pete & Pete

The Adventures of Pete & Pete is the greatest”kids show” of all time Full Stop. I use quotes because though on Nickelodeon and certainly made with children in mind it is so much more than that. There are very few kids shows that hold up to you nostalgic memories and yet somehow Pete & Pete exceed those expectations. When I think of puberty I think of Middle School and when I think of Middle School, I think of The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Oh and the music! The soundtrack is also phenomenal, Polaris made fantastic jangle pop.

New Found Glory - Sticks and Stones

I remember being 14 and the emo/pop punk scene starting to blow up (relatively haha) I was so into it and was constantly singing along to lines like "Though you swear that you are true, I still pick my friends over you" while my parents questioned what the hell I was listening to haha

So jealous you have this album. My first concert ever was NFG opening for Blink. I need!!

Day 10: Puberty - Teenage music discoveries

I would have been around 14 when this came out, listening to a lot of new wave & ska circa 1982. Hearing Shock the Monkey and then diving deep into this album was definitely one of those musical memories and turning points in what I listened to. The complexity & delivery of the lyrics, and the overall percussive nature of it keep me coming back for more.

I wasn't rebellious but, I was an angry, moody teen.
I bought this copy in 1989, 15 and pissed off with absolutely no reason at all.
Frank Black's screams on Tame are pure catharsis.

Pixies - Doolittle

Day 7 - Africa

Ngozi Family - 45,000 Volts

My favorite album from the Zamrock Box. What a collection of music. The album opener is a legit earworm. There’s something about an African dialect singing in English that makes the words more....immediate to me. Like they mean more because they are carefully chosen. And when they are singing in a different language (I am not sure what other languages they speak in Zambia) it’s almost as if the vocals are another musical instrument to my uncultured ear. I love this album.

Personal anecdote: I work for an electric company and the cover is amazing to me.

Day 10 - Puberty

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

In 1983 a 14 year old me was spinning this. That is, when I could pry Zeppelin off the turntable. This is a re-issue but I have my old copy, pictured below, you can see it's unplayable with hacks and scratches and stains (?).

Also, I just noticed that the re-issue and OG copy have different pics on back.
