If you would have told 30 year old me that someday I’d have 50+ Jazz albums I’m pretty sure I would have called you crazy. But over the past few years I’ve really gotten into jazz and my growing collection is a testament to that. One of the areas of growth for me is finding various leaders and sidemen that I enjoy, and on Moanin’ we have my favorite drummer (Blakey) and favorite trumpet player (Lee Morgan). Plus the title track is one of the all time best bops.

Day 24 - Adulthood: Tastes are refined, do you still listen to the same things or have they changed, play something you currently are enjoying

In recent years my taste in music got broader. One factor in this indeed is the VMP Club I've joined for the first time in November 2017. Via Streaming I try to listen to most albums they put out and I'm just buying the ones I really like.

That being said it opens me up to genres I didn't listen to much in the past like Jazz, Blues and to a smaller degree even Rap/Hip Hop or Soul/RnB. Smaller degree because I was listening to them also beforehand, but I'm diving deeper into them than before. 🙂🎶

Regarding Jazz, it's still a very new world to me, some I love, some I can't get into yet.

This is one of the first Jazz inspired records I bought, it's amazing 🎺❤️

Lightnin' Hopkins - Soul Blues

The biggest surprise of starting a vinyl collection was expanding my love for blues. I turn to that section of my shelves more than any other when I don't know what to listen to.

Last few years I've learned to appreciate Rap/Hip-Hop more. I find that I prefer those albums that have a more organic / jazzy sound. Love the bass on this one.

Day 24 - Adulthood

Jazz for me, too. My parents aren’t interested in jazz and neither were any of my friends growing up. It took me a while to get into once I got there, too. The fusion and free jazz stuff was actually easier for me at first because it was more similar to rock and punk in my mind. I still haven’t really come around to earlier stuff like bop, cool jazz, or vocal jazz.

Day 22: Personal favourite genre

Bill Callahan - Dream River

I suppose in a broad sense this is just "indie rock", but I've loved guitar-based folk music since my early teens. I love it a lot more when it's a bit off-kilter, with unusual arrangements and instruments, even over simple song structures, as Bill masters here. Iron & Wine's The Shepherd's Dog, my favourite album ever, would have been another really good example.

Day 24: Unique sleeve

Murder by Death - In Bocca Al Lupo

This was only, I think, the second record I ever bought a second copy of, and the first whose original copy was still in good condition. But these packaging was just too unique, and so much of the album art from the original CD was omitted for its regular vinyl versions. This one folds out to over eight feet long, including gorgeous art on both sides. It's a concept album about sinners in various circles of hell, illustrated throughout the length of the tree's roots underground.

Ornette Coleman - A Shape Of Jazz To Come (Atlantic, 1959 Stereo First Pressing)

This is a great idea for a challenge. My musical tastes have drastically changed over the years, but that isn't to say that I'm embarrassed or no longer like the music of my past, it's just that its changed direction and what I listen to now is very different. As a child I would listen to a lot of 'classic' rock records and the like which my parents and grandparents would listen to, the likes of The Eagles, Queen, etc. In my teens I was a skater (ha) and would listen to a lot of 'why doesn't the world understand me' music, the likes of Linkin Park, System Of A Down, etc. My Undergraduate Uni years were filled with a lot of electronic music and hip hop. The years after my undergrad studies was mainly hip hop and grime, and a lot of it. Nowadays I would say that 95% of the music I actively listen to is jazz. I always thought jazz to be too difficult to get into, and that in order to understand it I would need to have an understanding of how music is written and composed. While I'm sure it helps, just diving in and listening to music you like, reading the liner notes and seeing the line-up is enough to start a decent-sized rabbit hole to fall down. Free jazz is a particular sub-genre I never thought I would like or understand, and there's still some more extreme examples which I am yet to fully grasp, but its freeness is akin to punk in my opinion. It's tearing up the rules to create something which has no constraints.

Thursday (25) – Hype up a record label that you think deserves some attention

For today I pick the "Cash Money Records" Label because when VMP was releasing a few records from that label (Juvenile, Hot Boys, Mannie Fresh and Lil Wayne) all of them have been sounding phenomenal on my turntable. 🌋

Juvenile "400 degreez" 🔥🌞
