June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Day 25 - Hype up a record label that you think deserves some attention

Colemine Records - Soul Slabs Vol. 1

To me Colemine Records is the best in the game right now! Everything they put out, music and pressing wise, is fantastic and the Cole brothers are great dudes. I've been on the Colemine hype train for a few years now and basically tell everyone I know to listen to their stuff or gift them their records. I don't do that for any other label, but I'm all in for @Plaid Room / Colemine and am always excited for their releases.

Day 25 - label

Fruko y sus Tesos - Tesura

This is a two-for-one. Discos Fuentes are responsible for some of the best Latin music around. They have put out many of the great Colombian artists, and my particular favourite Fruko. This though is a reissue by Vampi Soul, a great label from Spain that has done a lot to showcase all sorts of Latin music from Peru, Colombia etc. Both are v much worth checking out.

Day 24: Adulthood

I still listen to the same stuff...and my tastes have also changed.

Collecting vinyl and having this and the Steve Hoffman forums to discuss and see what others are playing makes me look into music I wouldn't have listened to 20 years ago. When I was younger I had an aversion to female singers. I just couldn't get into them/relate to them. I really don't know why. Could be that I was really into rock and metal...and that just wasn't an area of music that female singers thrived in at the time.

That has changed in the last 20+ years, tho.

Somewhere along the way I fell into the Fairport Convention rabbit hole - probably by way of Jethro Tull and Pentangle.

Day 25: Hype a Label
Acony Records

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings purchased their own lathe and cut their own master discs. Welch reissued some of her earlier albums, a David Rawlings LP and this album from folk singer Willie Watson. So, not a big catalogue, but if this kind of music is your thing and you want to make your turntable sing, these are essential.

Day 25: Hype a label (with a label)

Older original pressings of releases on Vertigo are desired for the actual label. Whether it's a Europe or US release, a Vertigo swirl has a bit more of a premium over a Vertigo UFO label reissue, but those are pretty cool, too.

I had planned to take tango lessons this year. In the last couple of years I've discovered and appreciated tango, so dancing tango was something that I would've loved. And then, you know, Covid-19 happened.
These are two albums of tango that I'm enjoying. The first one, the one on vinyl, is old school. It's the kind of tango of the beginning of XX century.
The second one is AOTY for me, right after Fiona Apple's album. It's an orchestra that takes rock songs and turn it into tango. But they are still playing like it's rock music: the play strong, heavy, loud chords. I am obsessed with this album. I need it on vinyl asap (it's not going to happen but I can dream).
In case anybody wants to hear something of these guys, check this song as an example:

Little Wings - Wonderue (K Records, 2001)

Decided to keep local and highlight Calvin Johnson’s amazing launching pad of a label, Olympia, WA’s own, K Records. Unfortunately they have been in a rough place financially in recent years but in its heyday the label was putting out music from the likes of Beck, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, Microphones, etc... Little Wings was never a heavy hitter like the aforementioned artists but is one of my favorites nonetheless.

I think I already mentioned this label earlier. Jazz re:freshed

Founders: Justin McKenzie and Adam Moses have created an impressive movement in a modern jazz label. Nubya Garcia, SEED Ensemble, the 5ive series are all great and are sure to build on this excitement in the future.

I just received this reissue and Sarah Tandy, which I'll spin next.

Founded in Denver, Colorado in 1991, The Elephant 6 Recording Company (commonly known simply as Elephant 6) was a collective and record label operating from the underground. The collective was started by childhood friends Robert Schneider, Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart and Jeff Mangum, along with The Apples in Stereo members Jim McIntyre and Hilarie Sidney.

The Elephant 6 Recording Company (or simply Elephant 6) is a collective of American musicians that spawned many notable independent bands of the 1990s, including the Apples in Stereo, the Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beulah, Elf Power, of Montreal, The Minders and Circulatory System.

Honorable mention record labels:

1) Fat Wreck Chords
2) SKUNK Records

Hyping up ATO records. Really enjoying this collection they put together on bandcamp, and the proceeds go to a good place - Black Lives Matter New York, Color of Change, and Innocence Project. Got my vinyl order in for this.

Got a bit of catching up to do, hoping to sit back and spin some tonight. As we wrap up this challenge and move into the final days, I just want to thank everyone who has been participating. And an extra shout out to all those who have donated during this challenge publicly or privately!

If you have the ability our members have spotlighted these organizations and have donated to them

- Louisville Community Bail Fund

- Therapy for Black Girls
- http://www.cysticfibrosiscare.org.uk/ if you donate through the PayPal app to many charities currently PayPal matches the donation up to £5 or $5

Many of y'all have mentioned withdrawing from the donation drawing so I will be donating $50 to each of these organizations as an extra thank you for highlighting these efforts.

I'll get the spreadsheet updated hopefully by tonight

Based in Toronto, Arts & Craft has released some fantastic albums including artists such as Feist, Broken Social Scene, Japandroids, and my personal favorite Stars.
This album is great, and I was lucky enough to have met the band and have it signed a few years ago.

Day 25 - Hype a record label

Italians Do It Better is a label that I’m guessing most around here know, but if you haven’t ordered from them directly, you’re missing out. They always include free stuff, including CDs, 7 inches, and posters. I have like 5 CDs in my car of random bands or samplers from their roster - all get regular play.

Vinyl-wise, their main stuff at least (Chromatics and Johnny Jewel) is all cut by Bernie Grundman and pressed by Pallas. Really a great label.

Merge Records - Reigning Sound - Home for Ophans

Normally I'd lean on New West, Colemine or Daptone...three awesome labels from which that I have a lot of titles. But this record just showed up today, and being so excited to spin it I skipped the Spin-Cleaning this one time to get it on my TT. Still waiting on a reissue for RS's Break Up Break Down, hopefully that happens someday.

IMG_20200625_154616_265.jpg

I guess I'll also mention the label I created; Juniper Surfer Records.
There are a couple/few active artists on it, along with a few underground Michigan artists and bands, spanning from the 80s until now. Ska, punk, jam-band and more.
