Thursday (25) – Hype up a record label that you think deserves some attention

Stars - In Our Bedroom After the War (Arts & Crafts Productions)

View attachment 53730
Based in Toronto, Arts & Craft has released some fantastic albums including artists such as Feist, Broken Social Scene, Japandroids, and my personal favorite Stars.
This album is great, and I was lucky enough to have met the band and have it signed a few years ago.

Dude, very nice. My favorite STARS album.

Day 24: Adulthood

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare

At 31, I do still listen to a lot of the same stuff I liked when I was younger. My favourite artists -- Dylan, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Feist, Murder by Death, Bill Callahan, and a few others -- are all still my favourite artists. The Grateful Dead, who I've gotten into in the last several years, is really the only one I didn't already like by my early 20s.

One big change in my listening, though, is that I've been drawn to and enjoying way more international music. (I hesitate to use the term world music, but we'll go with non-English language music.) Maybe that's because in my mid and late 20s I was able to travel infinitely more than my youth and adolescence, or because the seemingly limitless world of streaming has opened up possibilities to check out stuff I'd never get exposed to or risk spending $20 on a CD before. This album, which was an exclusive from VMP, is probably the one that really made me realize I'd had blinders on for my entire life. Of course not all the best music came from the US, Canada, and Britain! That's impossible! It would be a waste of a life to only listen to stuff in my own native language. I don't understand a word of the lyrics here, but I think it truly is one of the best records I've ever heard, and I'm grateful for it opening my mind and so many other musical doors.

Day 25 – Hype up a record label that you think deserves some attention

Nubya Garcia ‎– Nubya's 5ive (Jazz Re:freshed, 2017 First Pressing)

Jazz Re:freshed are an incredible label which deserve every success they get in my opinion. I saw SEED Ensemble at the launch show for their Mercury Award nominated album and Adam Moses (one of the labels founders) was there. He gave an introduction before the group came on and stayed for the whole show jamming away in the crowd. You could really tell he was just someone that loved the music and loved helping these young musicians put their music out into the world. Class act through and through.

Don Giovanni Records is releasing some exciting, diverse music while calling out reviewers like Pitchfork for pandering to the music machine in choosing review material. I like that.

Here's a Don Giovanni favorite....

Screaming Females - Ugly

Day 25: Label Hype

Earlier this year, Daptone Records launched their newest sub-label, Penrose, based out of Southern California. They released their first 5 singles just a few weeks ago, all of which are pretty great, but my favourite in particular...

Thee Sinseers - “Seems Like” b/w “Seems Like (Instrumental)”

AA521B1B-3A91-46FA-B7B2-A6D28C754A5F.jpeg

Only the second single released by this group (the first being “It Was Only a Dream” on Colemine last year).

Although this is my favourite of the singles Penrose has pressed on wax so far, my favourite song of theirs so far is a song by Thee Sacred Souls released digitally just a couple weeks ago, “Give Us Justice”!

I cannot recommend this song highly enough, it’s some powerful stuff!

第二十二天:you're the fairest of them all

The Samuel Jackson five ~ easily misunderstood

There's few considered genres I don't like mainly, mainstream pop and country. I consider post rock my favorite as I love getting lost in long songs especially instrumental that take you on a journey, post rock combines so many elements of different genres that each group has such a diverse array of skills to display. I would've played the six parts seven if I was lucky enough to have them on vinyl but this is a good runner up

Day 17 - Older Adolescent

This album appeared out of nowhere for me. In my second year of College I found it downloaded on my iTunes without any recollection of adding it to my library. Couple listens later I was hooked, and a giant door was opened into further music exploration. John Martyn to this day is my favorite musician of all time, I bought all his original pressings and reissues, posters, biographies, you name it! This album is GOLD!

Day 18 - Hype an Artist

King Gizzard would not be the same band without their incredible artwork and videos. Jason Galea is definitely the first that came to mind for this challenge, others were Stanley Donwood (radiohead) and Pat Graham (modest mouse) but the volume of content that Galea has put out is seriously incredible. Check his instagram here

Also this video of Countdown is a wonderful example of his style!

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - 12 Bar Bruise

第二十三天:I wear my heART on my sleeves

Radiohead ~ king of limbs

IMG_20200625_202848.jpg

Im a sucker for trees, probably the reason why the used in love and death is my favorite cover art , so I decided to play king of limbs because one I love the trees on the sleeves and also because this was the first tour I got to see radiohead live and bought my favorite shirt from them the arbor philosphica.

第二十四天~ahh I'll take this with a fine whisky and a Cuban cigar please

Makoto Terashita ~ Great Harvest

I never hated jazz but I never really put it on, I like it live but couldn't understand a full album, fast forward about three years ago and all that changed, thanks to a lot of great recommendations from here and some help from others I finally understood what I like about jazz, it reminds me a lot of post rock , it takes you on an instrumental journey that leaves you craving for more

Meant to post these earlier...

DAY 23 - SLEEVES

Say what you want about Father John Misty, this album's schematic is beautiful. Two double-sided sleeves in a plastic casing means FOUR possible album covers!

DAY 24 - ADULTING

IMG_20200625_220114.jpg

Jay Som is one of the only newer artists that goes beyond "like" or "enjoy" with me. These albums resonate with me in ways that others miss.

Spinning this because I don't think it gets the love or attention it should against her other albums.

Friday (26) – Acid - Let’s go on a Psychedelic Journey

This topic fits very well to the discussion going on in the VMP thread haha. While I never have taken Acid myself, I think this record is giving incredible music to listen to while on such a journey. It's a mixture of Psychedelic Rock, but with Afrobeat influences. The band gained quick attention for their "What if Black Sabbath played afrobeat?" thesis and was praised by many critics for an innovative musical style. I think it sounds amazing. 🌋 🔥

Here Lies Man "You will know nothing"

Day 25: Acid.

I did acid a few times. I liked it. Liquid LSD on sugar cubes was much better than blotter...probably because there was more LSD.

Never listened to this album while on LSD, tho. Probably would have freaked out.
