June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

17 – The Moment I Knew- Now we’re into the Deluxe cuts. This is the first track once you get past the standard edition and it does make sense to why it was cut originally given it’s a bit reminiscent of a portion of All Too Well.

Play a Deluxe or Expanded Album

While I sit in the virtual waiting room to try for Smile tix in 10 minutes, this seems appropriate

Edited to add: Got tix for the Shrine. Waaaay at the back, but in!

12 – Sad Beautiful Tragic A bit of a tough track about isolation, longing, and waiting for something that will never work out.

Play a sad, beautiful, tragic album

Nick Drake – Pink Moon
Island Records/UMe – 1745697, 1972/2013

Cut by Sean Magee

11 – Holy Ground – Time heals all wounds right? This one is about looking through the bad in the past to recognize the good that was and getting a bit of healing from it, so…

Play an album with religious/spiritual themes

R.E.M. - Out of Time

OK, I know "Losing My Religion" isn't really about religion, but...

15 – Starlight I was this many days old when I learned this was about Ethel and Bobby Kennedy. Go figure right? Given she says as much in the lyrics that just proves I don’t listen to lyrics that well, so Play an album where you don’t really listen to the lyrics

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

The lyrics are pretty much indiscernible.

16- Begin Again – The title pretty-indicative of what you’re getting. This is also one of the small handful of songs that still linked itself to the country world before she went full on pop. Play an album by James Taylor or someone influenced by him/in his musical circle.

Al Jarreau - Glow

Contains a cover of Taylor’s “Fire and Rain”.

It's pretty rare when a perfect record gets re-released in an expanded edition and it actually becomes more perfect. In fact, it's damn near unheard of.

This is one of those rare cases.

The Who's Who's Next is an indisputable watershed record. The 3LP redux adds a side of studio outtakes that are stellar but the added value MVP here is 3 sides of live tracks from the Young Vic Theatre in 1971.

*looks at full storage box of records to spin*

Well it’s coming out of there for sure. So I’ll highlight one of my favorite singer songwriter albums that desperately needed a repress and got an anniversary expanded edition.

Plus it leads off with Record Collector so, even if it’s not quite the same purpose, she sees us.

Lissie - Catching a Tiger (Anniversary Edition)

Play an album where the artist is shifting their identity (Musically or Otherwise)

Rae Spoon – Superioryouareinferior
20220617_145838.jpg

With the release of this album, Rae retired from gender, adopted they/them pronouns and shifted sonically away from twangy banjo country music to a more indie/electric sound that would continue to evolve from this point into more of an indie/electro sound (thanks in no small part to time spent living in Germany.) This is one of my all-time favourite "Canadian" albums.

Fela Ransome-Kuti & The Africa '70 with Ginger Baker – Live!
20220617_154217.jpg

50th Anniversary Edition. An incredible album on its own, but this one was fully worth it to me for the inclusion of the Ginger Baker and Tony Allen Berlin Jazz Festival drum solo on the bonus disc.

Andrew Cedarmark - Moon Deluxe

This debut solo album by the former Titus Andronicus guitarist, is deluxe in name only (at least from a presentation standpoint, the music absolutely rips) it’s a pretty bare bones release from Underwater Peoples.

09 – Stay Stay Stay - Cutesy as heck and definitely a bit of a daydream about one of those ideal relationships, which after like the last eight tracks is a nice change.

Play a palette cleanser (the music you go to when you just need to take away all the emotions of the world)

Prince & the Revolution - Live (Carrier Dome, 1985)

So Prince is just a special listen for me. Not in the usual rotation per se, but damnit some days I just need to put him on, turn it up, and just vibe to cleanse the palate. This is a great live album to boot, and live albums also help me disconnect from the moment.

10 – The Last Time – At this point, this was a rarity in the Swift catalog – a true duet. I think it’s her first male-female collaboration on a mainline Swift album (she did have some features elsewhere) and man does it have a lot of Gary Lightbody on it.

Play an album featuring vocalists of at least two genders

Slowdive - Souvlaki

Shoegaze classic with vocalists of two genders.

18 – Come Back…Be Here: The track is another one that draws on themes of other songs (distance in relationships eventually crumbling them), albeit with a very different tone to it. Play an album about or that references New York

Miles Davis - On the Corner

The first track is comprised of several passages. The second passage is titled “New York Girl”
