June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

23 – Nothing New – Featuring Phoebe Bridgers like everything else in 2021 right? To Taylor’s credit, unlike nearly every other feature, Phoebe actually got to say words on this one. Also, it was inspired by Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You, and a song can only be so bad if it’s citing Joni Mitchell

Sonic Youth - Washing Machine

One of my favorite things about this dumb hobby of ours is the thrill of the hunt. New releases are alright, with the manufactured scarcity and the “limited” colored wax edition, Getting a new release is like hunting pheasant at one of those private clubs where Dick Cheney “accidentally” filled his buddies face with lead shot. It satiates the desire a bit but it’s nothing like bagging an honest to goodness trophy buck in the wild. The only comparison to that is finding a nice legitimately rare older vinyl release at a local record store. The thrill and excitement, the rush of adrenaline, it all makes for a very satisfying experience. I personally have been lucky to acquire a few 12 pointers over the years, this recent Original Pressing of Sonic Youths Washing Machine being the latest. I was lucky enough to pick this up from Rainy Day Records upon a random visit a few month back and couldn’t be happier. There some minimal wear to the jacket but the albums themselves are in fantastic condition.

I'm almost sure nobody has ever bought this album new, or least not in the last 50 years. There just seems to be an unending supply that gets released to goodwill / charity shops.

CROWDED HOUSE CROWDED HOUSE
(1986 Capitol, Columbia House pressing)
Picked this up last week - an original Columbia House pressing from a private collection. Record is quiet and immaculate, almost like a Japanese pressing, which is just amazing for a North American pressing of this age. Pressing sounds pretty good but I feel the highs could be boosted and the separation a little wider.

I would also like to note that it seems possible for gigantic clubs to press large runs of records with no pressing defects like background crackle, repetitive clicks, warps and non-fill.

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

@scotthilk assigned me a stack of three to play tonight, and this is the first of them which happens to fit for today’s prompt (I’ll be listening to that fantastic riff from “Can You Get To That” again when I put on the Sleigh Bells record later). I know some people think that when someone pulls out their phone and starts searching Discogs in a record shop, they’re looking to flip a record, but I’m actually just making sure I’m not buying a pressing that sounds like total garbage. This pressing is better than most, it seems.

I'm also checking to make sure I don't already own it... But still feel like an asshole when I do it?

A used Joni Mitchell album.

50 points to Gryffindor.

Joni Mitchell - Blue

21 – Ronan – The story behind this one is particularly tough. It’s worth reading in full but she wrote this about a three-year old who died of cancer after an eight-month battle. She has only performed it a handful of times and is something very different than nearly anything else she’s put out. On that somber note

Prince – Batman™ (Motion Picture Soundtrack)
20220623_164316.jpg

My introduction to Prince at age 9, and pprobably my most played non-Weird Al cassette. "Batdance" was tops, and "Scandalous" was not prepubescent me's favourite song --especially when in the car with my dad!-- but I quite thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it, and still do. I place this in much higher regard within the Prince catalogue than I think most do, and that's fine by me!

My last used pickup was this beauty. And boy howdy do I love me this album.

Maybe because I very rarely sell my records or maybe because I have no shame but I have never felt like an asshole for pulling out my phone at a record store.

I always check Discogs. If I don’t I usually end up A.) with a duplicate of something I already own, B.) a low quality pressing, or C.) overpaying for something I could pick up much cheaper elsewhere.

22 – Better Man – We’ve now made it to the Taylor’s Version exclusives. One of the more interesting aspects of this song is that she gave this to Little Big Town to use, which they then won a Grammy with.
Play an album by an artist who did a song called Better Man (Pearl Jam, Little Big Town, Robbie Williams, among others)

The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree

I was an adult when this came out, but the songs make me think of my own childhood situation at home. "Lion's Teeth" is the most honest depiction of how you fantasize about doing something about your abuser but know even in your fantasy the best you could hope for is a bad situation going sideways.

24 – Babe – Like Better Man, this is another one she wrote, shelved, and then gave to another country artist to deliver (Sugarland in this case). She also wrote this with the lead singer of Train.

Play an album that was initially released in the CD Era (you know, where Train belongs, let’s say 1990-2010), and yes I know there’s CD diehards here.

So like after the MoFi discussion I do intended to break out Train and troll in here but… then I went to the annual music and poster sale up here. Went over to the collector’s bin of pricier items (like, 3 to 40 dollars) and saw this. I freaked the ever loving hell out. I walked out with a ton of other cool things and I may go back for some jazz and punk I didn’t grab tonight…but holy crap I can’t believe I got this and I’m gonna spin it loud. Absolute grail for me and easily among the coolest records I own.
