June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

24 – Babe – Like Better Man, this is another one she wrote, shelved, and then gave to another country artist to deliver (Sugarland in this case). She also wrote this with the lead singer of Train.
Play an album that was initially released in the CD Era (you know, where Train belongs, let’s say 1990-2010), and yes I know there’s CD diehards here.

Shpongle – Tales Of The Inexpressible
20220624_215453.jpg

A perfectly timed arrival today! Not only was this originally released during peak CD era (2001) but it was also one of the cornerstones of my CDJ rocking era, back when I would DJ shows, raves, house parties and festivals. One of my absolute favourite electronic albums of any genre or flavour. I couldn't be any more thrilled by this reissue and the fact that I don't have to shell out $500+ for a copy of this!

25 – Message in a Bottle – When I first heard this song it felt like the kind of song you put in a cheesy feel-good movie scene. Other reviewers were reminded of Carly Rae Jepsen which, well, don’t we all wish we could be Carly?
Play something form an English artist in honor of Sting

THE POLICE Reggatta de Blanc
(1979 A&M Records; 2018 remaster from Every Move You Make box)
Going for the low hanging fruit today.

23 – Nothing New – Featuring Phoebe Bridgers like everything else in 2021 right? To Taylor’s credit, unlike nearly every other feature, Phoebe actually got to say words on this one. Also, it was inspired by Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You, and a song can only be so bad if it’s citing Joni Mitchell

Play an album you picked up used by Joni Mitchell

Daft Punk - Homework

One night in the mid/late 1990s I was doing homework (ha!) and listening to the radio late at night when I first heard “Da Funk” and I thought I had dreamt it. It’s a song that won’t let you forget it. I eventually bought the CD single at Camelot Music at the mall and played it to death. When the album was released, I put it on my birthday wish list and bless my sweet grandma, she drove all over town asking the stores if they had the compact disc by someone called “Daft Punk.” She finally found it at Fred Meyer, she told me.

Side note: count me in as a renewed CD die-hard. I started pulling down CDs of great albums that still haven’t been pressed from the attic and I got a new nicer CD player to add to my stereo and I will tell you, it’s been a lot of fun buying cheap used CDs again.

Phil Collins - No Jacket Required

Can’t believe I’m passing up the opportunity to play a pop record for this, but my kids showed me the trailer for Marcel the Shell With Shoes On the other day which used “Take Me Home” and it brought me back to our family road trips. My parents also played a lot of Sting. Both are English guys who had very successful solo careers after leaving their bands in the 1980s

Edit: I COULD argue that CRJ songs have borrowed some of the production characteristics of this album.

Play an album referencing country life and/or pigs

Since no one else has taken this one yet, might as well.

Charli XCX - Pop 2

Carly herself is along for the ride (hehe) on the intro track "Backseat" from this game-changing mixtape. I'm unsure a pop mixtape on this boundary-pushing level is comparable in the last five years (Number 1 Angel from Charli in the same year is fun, but nowhere near as creative).

I just got the CRJ Kiss reissue and could play that but since I played the pic disc earlier, I’ll audible and break open a Target grab that completed my super basic Haim collection. The Steps was the single and may e borderline calling it a banger but it’s a really dang good pop song.

Man, I played the crap out of this disc.

20 – State of Grace (Acoustic Version) – Making me think of four themes for a song, rude as heck.

Play an acoustic album

Sebadoh - Harmacy

A CD from deep within the CD-era from one of the genres that I deeply associate with CDs (90s-2000s indie rock and hip hop being very much CD-based genres to my mind).

21 – Ronan – The story behind this one is particularly tough. It’s worth reading in full but she wrote this about a three-year old who died of cancer after an eight-month battle. She has only performed it a handful of times and is something very different than nearly anything else she’s put out. On that somber note

Play an album that reminds you of your childhood

I've probably said this a few times before, but I'll say it all again. I didn't really have a lot of music in my life early on. We had MTV and local radio (KSHE 95 out of St Louis), but my parents listened to talk radio and I was busy riding my bike or playing baseball in the summer.

Anyway, cut to 1991 and I'm watching this movie on the regular, taped off of HBO or some other premium cable channel. I ask for the OST for Christmas thinking I'm getting a CD player, but I didn't. So I had to buy one myself about a week later. A cheap (but expensive for the time Fisher) (I also asked for and got Hammer - 2 Legit 2 Quit for some reason)

I know a lot of people don't like this OST, as it is missing a lot of tracks that were in the movie, but I think it's still pretty good. It got me listening to Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Peter Murphy, and reintroduced me to The Pixies.

22 – Better Man – We’ve now made it to the Taylor’s Version exclusives. One of the more interesting aspects of this song is that she gave this to Little Big Town to use, which they then won a Grammy with.

Play an album by an artist who did a song called Better Man (Pearl Jam, Little Big Town, Robbie Williams, among others)

They have a song called "Better Man" on the album 2010 "Stampede" and that doesn't have a vinyl release.
