June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

03 – Treacherous

Play an album featuring a lyric, artist, or music you’d consider (or have) gotten a tattoo about.

It's my one and only tattoo so far...nothing else has really pushed me to get another yet.

While I don't mind having the Barnes & Noble clear variant, this one sounds better to me.

04 – I Knew You Were Trouble

Play an album that represents a new partnership between musicians (can be a new supergroup, new producer, etc.)

Since I have no idea who this "Max Martin" is and have no releases that credit them, I'm going with this option...

The band added keyboardist Mick Schauer for a couple albums...this and From Beale Street To Oblivion. When he left the band they didn't feel the need to replace him. He past away in 2019.

(in full transparency I just got this yesterday and want to play it, so I'm forcing this one in a bit)

Clutch – Robot Hive / Exodus
Weathermaker Music – WM138, 2005/2022

# 2 release in Clutch Collector's Series

Signed/Numbered insert, #6251 / 7500
Bonus 7" with 2 tracks recorded during the same sessions, but left off the final release due to space constraints.

05 – All Too Well

For me, a breakup song has always been less about bashing the other party, and more about a way to process feelings surrounding the relationship. In that vein, I’ve always felt like “You and I” was a top-tier breakup song.

“I don’t think it’s me/I don’t think it’s you/It’s the universe/I can feel a change coming over us and it’s gonna hurt”

This one fits both..."I Don't Love You" seems like a good breakup song for those emo types.

Death Cab For Cutie - Kintsugi

Nowhere near their best break up songs, but this whole album was created around the ends of both romantic and professional relationships and the lyrics show it. I haven’t played since the year of its release, it’s still fine.

05 – All Too Well

This is generally considered by critics and fans to be on the Mount Rushmore of Swift’s songs (Buzzfeed and Rolling Stone had it at #1, Vulture at #2 for instance). A brutal, meticulously detailed, recounting of a breakup that would send nearly anyone into hiding after hearing it if it were about them. The ten minute version will come up later but the standard five and change also works quite well too.

"Green Light" is one of the great breakup songs of the '10s.

This is one of my favorite pickups so far this year. It took an album I only kinda liked and turned it into one of my favorites because of how freaking amazing the detail in the sound is. So good.

Same here! This pressing sounds so amazing. I kind of enjoyed this album previously - well, mostly the track "Can't Get It Out Of My Head". But this pressing took it to a whole new level. There are funky elements throughout I just never really noticed even though they're so damn prominent in the end. And I love funky beats. The strings are more of a balancing element on this pressing instead of feeling more forward from how I remembered the album. Love it now!

Play an album with a great breakup song

I like the air that I breathe
I like the thoughts that I think
I like the life that I lead
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
Like how it's all coming clear
All the words that I hear
Like how I'm not in fear
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
And it's not because I don't love
Just don't have time to explain
All the things you think you've come to understand
About me
About me
About me
About me

Big "why not both" energy on this choice. The album is the journey of a relationship and a breakup. Take your choice of great breakup songs. Supercut is my jab, Liability is incredible..

04 – I Knew You Were Trouble –This is also one of the handful of songs on the album she brought in Max Martin for as well as a huge single for her. The Max Martin relationship flourished in the coming years. As such

Low - Ones and Sixes

This album marks the start of what is (so far) an extremely fertile three-album collaboration: Low and producer B.J. Burton. Together they have pushed the band's sound in a new directions and reached new creative peaks.

How about a breakup album?

Phil Collins - Face Value

…that’s what I’d classify this album as, anyway. (though “divorce album” sounds more fitting)
A lot of spite in that divorce, since it rolled over to the lead-off track of this album too.

02- Red – The title track and one of the singles off the album really tries to hit at an emotional angle as opposed to some of the more descriptive songs she tends to write.

I think I've had a crush on Carly Simon since I was five. My mom and her friend who lived a few doors down from us in the projects would play this album and drink margaritas while us kids would run through the sprinkler. Classic breakup song.

06 – 22 – You know this is kind of jarring after listening to All Too Well and makes this countdown counting so let’s keep this one simple folks

Play an album by an active artist with at least 22 years in the industry.

Steve Roach - Structures From Silence

Going with one of the ambient greats here. He has released over 140 albums since 1983 (!), including five this year so far (!!).
