June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

03 – Treacherous – As is all too well known, many of Taylor Swift’s tracks are about individuals she has dated and there is endless speculation on this. The endless speculation leads to some fun facts. This song is believed by many to be about former One Direction singer and current pop megastar Harry Styles “won’t stop ‘til it’s over”, which is a tattoo he has from the song Sweet Disposition by The Temper Trap. It’s pretty rough folks.

Play an album featuring a lyric, artist, or music you’d consider (or have) gotten a tattoo about.

Jay-Z - The Blueprint

So I don't have any tattoos. I often say "Why would I put a bumper sticker on a Maybach?" when asked why I don't have one.

During "Otis" from Watch The Throne, Kanye raps "Maybach bumper sticker read What Would Hova Do?"

And that's probably the only tattoo I'd get. And this album would be a huge reason why.

07 – I Almost Do The “nah, should I, nah” meme of songs.
Play an album you picked up and put down a few times before ultimately buying it.

This one I had on CD for years before getting the vinyl. As it was never pressed on LP stateside, it was an electronic pick up (put in cart) and put down (remove from cart). I eventually found one in great shape at a great price and it actually stayed in the cart til I paid up.

Such a fun record of Grateful Dead covers. A few favorites...

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

I had done this with the Joy Division classic at least four times. With the modern post-punk/Windmill bands making headway into the decade and my increasing interest in the genre, the time was right last year.

Play the first part of a double album.

Haha, I do that all the time. Although I do try to get the second halves on the table in the next few days afterwards.

06 – 22 – You know this is kind of jarring after listening to All Too Well and makes this countdown counting so let’s keep this one simple folks. Play an album you loved when you were 22 (if you’re not 22 yet…I’m jealous but also play something you think you’ll like when you are)

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

I turned 22 in 2013. There were so many albums from that year that really stuck with me, but I gotta go with this today. For such a throwback sound, it still sounds fresh and exciting.

05 – All Too Well

This is generally considered by critics and fans to be on the Mount Rushmore of Swift’s songs (Buzzfeed and Rolling Stone had it at #1, Vulture at #2 for instance). A brutal, meticulously detailed, recounting of a breakup that would send nearly anyone into hiding after hearing it if it were about them. The ten minute version will come up later but the standard five and change also works quite well too.

Play an album with a story arc over multiple songs (or the whole album)

Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid

How about a story arc over multiple albums?

missed a few days, might go back to them later... but for now

07 – I Almost Do - Play the first part of a double album

it's been a while since I've listened to this beast, so picking this was pretty much a no brainer for today

KAMASI WASHINGTON - Heaven And Earth

04 – I Knew You Were Trouble –This is also one of the handful of songs on the album she brought in Max Martin for as well as a huge single for her. The Max Martin relationship flourished in the coming years. As such

Play an album that represents a new partnership between musicians (can be a new supergroup, new producer, etc.)

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman - Garcia/Grisman

A rekindling of a partnership (from the 70s, Grisman played mandolin on American Beauty and they were in Old and in the Way together) that created new and great acoustic music in the 1990s that started with this album.

07 – I Almost Do The “nah, should I, nah” meme of songs.

This fits both challenges for today. I've picked it up at my local several times and almost pulled the trigger with trade in credit a couple times, but they overpriced it and keep raising the price for some reason. I've had it in my cart on discogs a couple times too, only to not pull the trigger and have the copy sell. Finally grabbed it in a blowout sale last week for the cheapest I've ever seen it. It arrived with a couple corner smushes, but the music is unharmed and the recording/pressing is top notch. I'm through the first three discs and was going to stop but it really is a great sounding show so I'm gonna finish it.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rat’s Nest

I’ve loved this album ever since it released, but always passed on owning a copy until recently.

Robyn - Body Talk

I was kinda surprised that this was the only album I owned that had Max Martin involvement, I am not a huge fan of modern Pop music but after going over Martin’s credits I can say I am definitely on the Jack Antonoff side of the Pop music spectrum. This record only contains a single Max Martin cut, “Time Machine”; and it’s one of my least favorites on the album. The album though is pure fire.

Play an album with a great breakup song

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

Look, I get it, Ryan Adams is a dirtbag and I completely get why many are unable to enjoy his music at this point, I am not going to make excuses for his shitty behavior just because he writes great songs. I am gonna try to separate the art from the man here. Heartbreaker was the first album of his that I fell in love with and part of the reason is that it’s an excellent collection of beautiful songs, many of which deal with break ups.

I've been meaning to pick this album up for years. Listened to the new Beth Orton track the other day, which led me down the rabbit hole of her collaborations with the Chemical Brothers, like their cover of I Never Asked to Be Your Mountain. That also reminded me of the excellent end of this album with Where Do I Begin (feat Beth Orton) --> Private Psychedelic Reel. Leading to finally tracking down a copy.

The Hold Steady - …Almost Killed Me

At 22 I had just moved back home, and was sleeping on a futon in my mom’s family room. I was working at a furniture warehouse part time basically making just enough money to get fucked up at Bob & Ringos, my preferred hometown bar (The had shuffle board and $2 Bud Light Bottles); with my hoodrat friends on the weekends… it was a lot more fun than it had any right to be.

I was just telling @jamieanderson1968 a couple days ago that I had almost purchased this record on several occasions. It wasn’t that I was on the fence about the album itself though, it’s brilliant; but my local has had a single copy in stock for at least a couple years now and I keep telling myself, I will buy it next time. Well, Jamie recently picked it up and gave the pressing rave reviews, which turned out to be the push I needed to finally add the album to my collection.

I put this one on the other day but only listened to side 1 of 3, so wanted to spin it in its entirety because I fucking love this album and it's been too long.

Black Dub is a supergroup consisting of Daniel Lanois (super producer and multi instrumentalist who certainly needs no introduction), Brian Blade (jazz drummer extraordinaire and legend), Daryl Johnson (Neville Brothers and Bob Dylan), and Trixie Whitley (who was the newcomer at the time but has since continued with her solo career, and is the daughter of the late, great Chris Whitley). they only released this one album together and their live performances elevated their sound beyond this recording... I'd certainly rather listen to any of the "Live Off The Floor" versions any day, but that's due to the raw perfection... the studio versions are still fantastic and it's a fantastic sounding pressing that I'll never tire of.

BLACK DUB - S/T

also got to see them play live a few times, one of my favorites was back in 2010 at this tiny venue, Rockwood Music Hall, with just Daniel Lanois and Trixie Whitley... it was so stripped down and raw... simply beautiful

I have this phenomenon often when I’m trying to fill in an artist discography. I grew up listening to Jack Johnson and love his older stuff but fell off. It felt about time to grab his latest release before seeing him in a few weeks. I’ll pic it up in a bit

"Eyes Like The Sky" may be my least favorite Gizz album, but it's still a good album and one of their most interesting concepts. basically it's a Western Audiobook narrated by one of the band members father, a pretty wild move for a band's 2nd album but Gizz is a pretty wild band.
