June 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Red (N&G's Version)

06 – 22 – You know this is kind of jarring after listening to All Too Well and makes this countdown counting so let’s keep this one simple folks

Play an album you loved when you were 22 (if you’re not 22 yet…I’m jealous but also play something you think you’ll like when you are)

I turned 22 in 1999. Looking at some of my 1999 albums is interesting. I seemed a bit confused.

Aphex Twin - Windowlicker
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Guided By Voices - Do The Collapse
Josh Wink - Profound Sounds Vol. 1
Korn - Issues
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
Richie Hawtin - Decks, EFX & 909
Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
XTC - Apple Venus Volume 1

and my pick

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
Nothing Records/Interscope Records – B0025682-01, 1999/2017

Not gonna lie, I kinda feared this one as I came up with the themes. I pulled up my last.fm and, honestly...not that bad! Maybe even a year or two earlier would've been really bad but a lot of my favorite albums of all time were also enjoyed a lot by 22 year old me. I would've never guessed this was my top played album in my 22nd year but it's still my favorite of theirs for now (that Brian Wilson project though...).

R.E.M. MONSTER (1994 Warner Brothers; 2019 Craft Recordings 25th anniversary reissue)
I turned 22 at the end of 1993 and was that age throughout much of 1994. I'd been a R.E.M. fan for years at that point and played the hell out of this record right upon release.

05 – All Too Well

This is generally considered by critics and fans to be on the Mount Rushmore of Swift’s songs (Buzzfeed and Rolling Stone had it at #1, Vulture at #2 for instance). A brutal, meticulously detailed, recounting of a breakup that would send nearly anyone into hiding after hearing it if it were about them. The ten minute version will come up later but the standard five and change also works quite well too.

Play an album with a great breakup song

I think I've had a crush on Carly Simon since I was five. My mom and her friend who lived a few doors down from us in the projects would play this album and drink margaritas while us kids would run through the sprinkler. Classic breakup song.

I have similar stories; I have always had a crush on Carly...plus the music is drenched in nostalgia for me too.
Throw in Carole King, Nicolette Larson, Linda Ronstadt, and even some Babs, and that was my mom's vinyl collection.

04 – I Knew You Were Trouble –This is also one of the handful of songs on the album she brought in Max Martin for as well as a huge single for her. The Max Martin relationship flourished in the coming years. As such
Play an album that represents a new partnership between musicians (can be a new supergroup, new producer, etc.)

Daniel Lanois pulls Dylan out of his mid 80's doldrums and helps create one of his best records.

A crushingly beautiful song...

No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom

I absolutely love break up songs and albums! I have so many favorites that it was hard to pick one for today (it was oh so tempting to use this opportunity to play Rumours), I decided to go with one that I don’t talk about enough! Don’t Speak is such a great look at a relationship that is falling apart and Gwen’s vocal performance in it is honestly the best in her career!

06 – 22 Play an album you loved when you were 22

I was in high school in California when this came out, and as you can imagine, it dominated that entire school year and beyond.. 22 year old me.. and even older me still digs it. Favorites are Lyrical Gangbang and Stranded on Death Row thanks to the sinister stylings of the innovator, dominator, and narrator RBX.

Dr. Dre - The Chronic

Released when I was 21, but 22 year old me was definitely flipping between this and the Grateful Dead Without a Net on heavy rotation. Two sides of the same coin...

The Walkmen - Bows + Arrows

I was 22 years old through most of 2004. I was in college at the time and working nights at a local record store and most of my paycheck was going right back to the store. I was also interning for a record label in town and went to a ton of shows. It was a very fun time but I cannot tell you how I managed to graduate from college.

I'm very sad that I don't have this on vinyl as it only had one pressing and they are really expensive now. But I listened to this album a lot when I was 22. So streaming it is!
