Let The Music Oracles Speak: The January Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

Splain yourself, did he kick your puppy?
I wrote about it on here before. Both the crap he put out with Obama that was very pro center right politics which he followed up with that "The Middle" Jeep ad/political diarrhea of an absolutely out of touch rich old white guy shitting on progressive politics.

Self righteous rich liberals thinking they're the "adults" are almost as obnoxious as the MAGA chodes.

Kendrick Lamar

His innovative and thought-provoking albums, such as "good kid, m.A.A.d city" and "To Pimp a Butterfly," showcase his ability to address complex societal issues, making him a voice for the marginalized. Lamar's legacy is marked by his influence on the evolution of rap, seamlessly blending conscious rap with mainstream appeal. For the past ten yers Kendrick has taken the rap and hip hop game by storm. Today, spin something that pays homage to Kendrick - whether it be Kendrick himself, other rap/hip hop artists, or another young new artist who has jumped to the top of their genre over the last decade.

Day 11: Boogie Down Productions - By All Means Necessary

I always will associate Kendrick with social consciousness and being thought provoking. This is acclaimed as one of the first politically conscious rap albums and, as such, is a spiritual ancestor to Kendrick’s work.

January 12: Patti Smith

Patti Smith is celebrated for her revolutionary contributions to the punk rock movement in the 1970s, blending poetry with music in a unique and influential way. Her distinctive vocal style and powerful stage presence have captivated audiences, earning her a reputation as the "punk poet laureate." Beyond her musical prowess, Smith's socially conscious lyrics and fearless approach to self-expression resonated with a generation seeking authenticity and rebellion. Her legacy endures not only for her iconic albums like "Horses" but also for inspiring subsequent generations of artists to embrace individuality and challenge conventional norms in the world of music.

To be honest, I am the least familiar with Patti Smith out of all of the oracles thus far. That will change today! That being said, consider playing an album today either by Patti Smith, reflecting her influence, OR explore music by an artist you're less acquainted with but eager to discover.

Day 12: They Might Be Giants - Lincoln

An artist that I was only familiar with the “hits.” This album makes me eager to discover more of their work.

January 10: David Bowie

I'll go Bowie but left of center. This is for @Joe Mac ...

Terry gave Bowie a tape of Gabrels' guitar playing. Months later, after listening to the tape, Bowie phoned Gabrels to invite him to get together to play and write. Bowie told him that he felt he had "lost his vision" and was looking for ways to get it back. After a month working together, Gabrels asked Bowie what he wanted of him, and, according to Gabrels, Bowie said "Basically, I need somebody that can do a combination of Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Belew and Fripp, with a little Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King thrown in. Then, when I’m not singing, you take the ball and do something with it, and when you hand the ball back to me, it might not even be the same ball."

"You can be broke without being broken."

Over the last few decades, I've seen a lotta live shows and probably 95% of those were in small clubs. I soured on most shed/stadium shows a good while back. I really connected with the intimacy of small venues and felt a deeper connection with the artists in a tiny room. And naturally, those playing a 300-capacity room aren't exactly rollin' in dough. More times than not, getting to the next gig depends on selling some merch and the attendees spreading the word. That's one of the reasons I always make a merch purchase at shows like these and also one of the reasons I became a taper to help promote the artists and their wares.

One band I connected with a long time ago was Lee Bains & The Glory Fires. I've seen them 11 times. They always bring incredible passion to their live shows whether they're playing for 2000 folks or 20. And I've seen them play to less than 20. This is a band that is never broken.

The last time I saw Lee he was playing a solo show in the afternoon. Like many of the shows before, I was taping. Here's some 5PM broad daylight burning passion...

The life of the musician is a tenuous one. Not long after I taped this show, Lee suffered a serious neck injury at his day job that took him out of work and blew up a planned tour for about a year. He's been able to ease back in a bit but that length of time off the road for a musician who makes the bulk of their income via touring is devastating.

If you'd like to make a purchase direct from Lee, here's a link...

Day 13: Bruce Springsteen - The Rising

A top-tier Bruce album in my opinion (Tunnel of Love is my favorite), I have find memories of The Rising as it came out right after my Freshman year in College and helped contextualize a lot of things (even if looking back, things weren’t so simple). This contains a lot of my favorite latter half of his career tunes on it.
