Let The Music Oracles Speak: The January Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

January 14: Shakira

Angélique Kidjo – Celia

As Africa's premier diva, Benin's Angélique Kidjo has brought a distinct voice to popular music for four decades now. She is fluent in five languages (Fon, French, Yorùbá, Gen (Mina), and English), and has also sung in Swahili and Spanish. Keeping with Shakira's Latin vibes, her album Celia pays tribute to Cuba's Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz.

January 15: Nina Simone

Nina Simone "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter / Save Me"
(2002 Jazzman)
Spinning this awesome Nina Simone double-A side 7" released on Jazzman twenty some years ago. Love "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter" in particular - that track used to figure prominently on mix-CD's I'd make at the time. In fact, I think I should put it back into rotation.

"Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter" is 🔥🔥🔥

Day 15

So recently my wife admitted to me that she doesn’t like listening to Ms Simone because the sadness and anger is so palatable in her music.

Which led me to play this today, as I think Ms Apple might bring more emotion to her art than any other singer out there today.

January 13: Bruce Springsteen
I'm one of those people that never got into The Boss. I definitely like a couple songs here and there but have never listened to much of his catalog overall. So I'll go with this album that has a cover of I'm On Fire on it.

January 16: Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix,
born in 1942, stands as a pioneering force in the history of rock music. Renowned for his revolutionary approach to the electric guitar, Hendrix catapulted to fame in the 1960s with The Jimi Hendrix Experience and their groundbreaking album, "Are You Experienced," released in 1967. Tracks like "Purple Haze" showcased his unparalleled skill and innovative use of feedback and distortion.

Hendrix's influence transcended the musical realm; he became an emblem of counterculture, known for his bold fashion choices and advocacy for peace during a tumultuous era. His performances at iconic events like Woodstock solidified his status as a cultural icon.

Tragically, Hendrix's life was cut short at the age of 27 in 1970, but his impact lives on. His posthumously released albums, including "Electric Ladyland" and "Band of Gypsys," continue to captivate audiences, ensuring that his legacy as a transformative figure in rock and roll endures. Jimi Hendrix's artistic innovation, stage charisma, and cultural influence make him an enduring symbol of musical creativity and rebellion.

One of the most influential guitarists and musicians ever. Period. Spin something today inspired by this card - whatever it may be! Long live the spirit of Jimi Hendrix - one of my all time favorites.

According to lore, in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Jimi Hendrix was asked, “How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?” He is believed to have answered, “I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher.” Accounts of Hendrix’s reference to the Irish blues-rock guitarist and singer abound but, to be honest, I have not been able to ascertain its veracity.

So i go with this great Rory Gallagher live album for today
