Let The Music Oracles Speak: The January Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread

January 23: Freddie Mercury

Queen was one of the first bands i really loved and when i heard the news of Freddie passing on the news in the car radio teenage me was shocked. Still nowadays i only have the two greatest hits albums and this on vinyl and it probably won't be much more in the future. Experts will notice the meticulously spaced lettering on the cover of this version
Their first two albums are worth it, because they're concept albums without the single/filler setup of so many of their later albums. I think they are the next best to have after the greatest hits and I actually spin them way more often than the greatest hits.

January 23: Freddie Mercury

I recently read through a fair bit about Héctor Lavoe's life and learned that he died of AIDS at 46. His was supposedly from intravenous drug use. Self destructive habits and artistic creation seem to go hand in hand too often in our society. We've lost out on a lot of beauty in this world because the ugliness snuffed it out.

Héctor guests on several tracks on this Willie Colón album. Crime Pays.

January 23: Freddie Mercury

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett had a joke that any cassette left in a car for more than two weeks would turn into Queen's Greatest Hits, which made it into their book Good Omens. This translated into the Good Omens TV show in that Crowley's car seems to always play Queen songs. This in turn led to my 16 year old being obsessed with Queen and all things Neil Gaiman. Neither of which is a bad thing.

🍾Extravagance is the wicked stepmother of invention

The album’s themes centre around fame & extravagance & vinyl box sets can be a rather extravagant purchase at times (not this one, it was rather inexpensive compared to how much it goes for now lol)

EDIT: I also just realized I played an artist who got her name from a Queen song. uhhh… I meant to do that?

The cards have spoken!

Day 23: Freddie Mercury

Love Freddie Mercury that I have his solo and compilation albums....but I I love the band more - so I'm going with this greatest hits comp - and not the usual one that was released the next year.

Queen – Greatest Hits
EMI – OLE-7012, 1980

South Korean only compilation

This has a different tracklist than the Greatest Hits that was released everywhere else in 1981...

January 24: Kurt Cobain

IMG_9537.jpeg

Kurt Cobain was a pivotal figure in the music industry, best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the iconic rock band Nirvana. Born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, Cobain displayed a passion for music from a young age. Nirvana's breakthrough came with their second album, "Nevermind," released in 1991, featuring the smash hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Cobain's distinctive songwriting and raw, emotional performances contributed to the band's immense success and their influence on the grunge movement.

Tragically, Kurt Cobain's life was cut short when he died by suicide on April 5, 1994, at the age of 27. His untimely death shocked the music world and left a lasting impact on fans globally. Cobain's legacy endures not only through Nirvana's enduring popularity but also through his status as an emblematic figure of the '90s alternative rock scene. His influence extends beyond music, as Cobain is often remembered for his anti-establishment ethos and the challenges he faced in the spotlight.

Kurt and Nirvana influenced a whole generation; a whole genre; a whole movement. Spin something today by Nirvana, an artist who was influenced by Nirvana, or anything else that this card inspires.

I'll save the Nirvana for those that don't have anything else to go with. I'm going with a release that made his Top 50 Albums list -
