Blackalicious - The Craft

Haven't had much chance to use the turntable this week so I need to go digital to catch up... The bit about the lotus blooming reminded me of the song "Lotus Flower" featuring George Clinton.

Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear

Elephant 6 bands tended to traffic heavily in the pop and psychedelic sounds of the Beatles, Beach Boys, Zombies, etc... and Beulah are no exception.

Are you trying to pull my heart strings? Are you going through my Discogs? What is this trickery?

This is one of my favorite albums. Ironically, I always listen to their 3 main albums when I am on road trips - specifically, to So Cal. Guess where I am now? On a road trip, in So Cal. Great choice.

January 26: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga
's unparalleled popularity can be attributed to a combination of her exceptional musical talent, avant-garde style, and unapologetic individuality. From the onset of her career, Gaga showcased an extraordinary vocal range that set her apart in the highly competitive music industry. Her ability to seamlessly blend pop, dance, and electronic elements produced infectious and chart-topping hits that resonated with a diverse audience. Songs like "Poker Face," "Bad Romance," and "Shallow" demonstrated her versatility and ensured a widespread appeal, earning her a devoted fan base.

Beyond her musical prowess, Lady Gaga's bold and distinctive fashion choices became synonymous with her brand. She pushed the boundaries of conventional pop culture aesthetics, embracing avant-garde and often theatrical ensembles that captivated the public's attention. Whether it was the infamous meat dress or her futuristic glam persona, Gaga's fashion became a form of artistic expression that mirrored her fearless approach to creativity. Additionally, her advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, mental health awareness, and other social issues endeared her to fans who appreciated her authenticity and commitment to using her platform for positive change. Lady Gaga's popularity is not just about her music; it's a result of her multi-faceted artistry, unique persona, and genuine connection with her audience.

I saw Lady Gaga's jazz show in Vegas a few years ago and it was really inspiring. She's the real deal! Spin something today by Gaga, an individual/band who "oozes individuality", or another artist who this card inspires.

Damn, some seriously great albums picked today. I wish I could comment on them all, but wanted to at least give this one love. "The Rise and Fall of Elliott Brown" is such a fantastic song.

Super Furry Animals - Guerrilla

"There's nothing more precious than frivolity." Some of my favorite bands are deadly serious, but there's also a great place for bands that match their seriousness with frivolity or even some straight-up goofiness. I thought of bands like the Flaming Lips, but ultimately went with some Super Furry Animals for lush production and songcraft mixed with playful fun- something I think Freddie definitely understood.
