I went with the phrase 'Don't become your own tribute band' on the card and decided to play Sturgill Simpson - Sound & Fury
There's another obvious connection because he covered In Bloom, but my angle here is that he put out this album right after Sailor's Guide to Earth, which was SO different than the album that got him some major acclaim, because he clearly wasn't interested in repeating the style of material that was on Sailor's. I certainly like Sailor's better than this one, but I genuinely appreciate the kind of musician and artist he is.
"Who the Fuck is Sturgill Simpson" indeed.
Bob Dylan is an iconic American singer-songwriter and musician who played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of folk and rock music. Rising to prominence in the early 1960s, Dylan's lyrical prowess and distinctive vocal style set him apart as a powerful voice of his generation. His early work, marked by protest songs and social commentary, such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin'," made him a symbol of the counterculture movement and a spokesperson for civil rights.
Dylan's ability to evolve and experiment with different musical styles throughout his career has contributed to his enduring fame. From folk to rock to country, he continually reinvented himself, creating a diverse body of work that spans over six decades. Notable albums like "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde" showcased his poetic lyrics and innovative approach to music, solidifying his status as a cultural icon. Bob Dylan's impact on the music industry goes beyond his individual achievements; he has influenced countless artists and remains a figure of inspiration for those exploring the intersection of music and social commentary. His legacy as a Nobel laureate in literature, multiple Grammy Award winner, and an enigmatic figure in the history of popular music cements his place as one of the greatest and most influential artists of all time.
Today, throw on something by Dylan - or - play something by an artist who is a masterful storyteller.
I would’ve gone for Elton on that prompt, but as far as vinyl goes, I only have Tumbleweed Connection & the Complete Thom Bell Sessions which aren’t exactly his most extravagant albums…
I don't own any Lady Gaga - or have anything that has a song she wrote for someone else...so picking someone with a somewhat equivalent amount of theatrics, and who she had stated in the past as someone who influenced her in the beginning of her career.
Marilyn Manson – The Pale Emperor Loma Vista – 36897, 2015
Darkness will be falling but we're not there yet, gave me the same idea as @Yer Ol' Uncle D , but since that has already been taken I'm going with a more recent album if Dylan covers
Day 27
I have a lot of storytellers in the to be played pile! This is the one I’m going with because it is shiny and new and I love it:
Sarah Jarosz - Polaroid Lovers
From “When The Lights Go Out”
What if it was New Year's Eve? Black tie and evening gown
Would you tug at the hem of my sleeve, kiss me while we're countin' down?
Who are you when the lights go out? You got me wondering
How'd you go from a face in the crowd to where we are now?
Like @imtheocean, I quickly thought of Bjork. Both wore news-making gowns (although the swan dress later seemed tamer after the meat dress) and both have had leading roles in films
