May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

Day 12: FOMO buy you haven’t spun in awhile

I'm not a FOMO guy in the classical sense. Numbered edition, color variant, special packaging - 99% of the time it's a money grabbing ruse. Just give me a flat, black record that sounds spectacular. I'm in it for the music. And with that said, FOMO situations I've experienced revolve around original pressings.

As documented in another thread - Complete collections. - I'm a completist when it comes to a few artists and, for better (music) or worse (wallet), one of them is Neil Young.

This EP was officially released on vinyl only in Australia in 1989. Subsequently 6 or so unofficial vinyl copies popped up. Drug my feet for a few years and when I tried to find one I could never run across an official copy. When I finally saw one at a decent price I jumped.

Haven't listened in a while. It's great loud Neil.

Day 12- FOMO
Saba - Care For Me

I'm not a FOMO buyer either, at least not of things I'm not sure I like, but fear of a repeat of me almost missing out on Noname because I didn't want to sign up for a stupid club made me make the leap and join VMP for this one. Not sure it has been the greatest decision as of late, but at the very least I'm grateful for it leading to being a member of this community. The initial 3 months sub was definitely worth it for this as I definitely wouldn't be picking it up for 3rd party prices.

Lee "Scratch" Perry + Subatomic Sound System - Super Ape Returns to Conquer
Echo Beach, 2017

I love the artwork. The music does not feel inspired; it feels too polished and perhaps "phoned in". You should feel reggae in your soul but this feels soulless. YMMV though. Perhaps I need to spend more time with this.

Day 12: FOMO buy you haven’t spun in awhile

So this is kinda embarrassing..I searched for years for a non counterfeit copy of this on vinyl , changed my VMP sub from monthly to quarterly to ensure I got a copy of this ..and this is the FIRST time I’ve played it! Shocking ..but had to have the house to myself so I could play it LOUD! Good job on this VMP

Day 12: FOMO buy you haven’t spun in awhile

Eddie Gale - Eddie Gale's Ghetto Music

I'm still not really a huge jazz fan, but I had picked up Bossa Nova Bacchanal from VMP's original collaboration with Blue Note and loved it. When this popped back up on the website in a small number, I got caught up in the hype on the old forum and took the plunge. I give it a shot every now and again and while it's beautiful and sounds good and I can appreciate it, I still don't really like it that much.

Nat Turner Rebellion - Laugh to Keep From Crying

Love the story of this album and being a philly boy I had to support them, but i was planning to not get it until I spent some time with it on streaming. But then I saw how excited the forum got and I had to get it month one. Havent spun it since I took it out the box

Day 6 - Bargain Bin

I picked up this OG copy of Pretty Hate Machine for $5 several years ago at Half Price Books. It’s definitely VG/VG, but still the cheapest it’s ever sold for on Discogs is $40.

I’ve got a ton of bargain bin records I’ve accumulated over the years that I still play regularly. As others have mentioned, sadly these days it seems like the bargain bin is only for thrashed records or total garbage.

Day 12: FOMO buy you haven't spun in a while

Hot Chip - A Bath Full of Ecstasy

I made sure to pick this one up from the record store on the way home from work on release day. It's actually pretty great, but with a discography like Hot Chip's, this album seems a little understated and has never grabbed me as much as most of their others, so it haven't spent as much time on the turntable... but, every time I put in on the table, like now, I enjoy it from start to finish.

Wendell Harrison - Dreams Of A Love Supreme

Eh, this album was an impulse FOMO buy. I don’t know if it just my copy or if Tidal Wave Music just recorded a 128kbps mp3 ripped to wax but it sounds pretty bad. I got an email from Fat Beats pushing it and that the blue vinyl limited to 100 total and after giving it a cursory listen I jumped on it only to realize later that basically any store that wants a Tidal Wave “exclusive” colored pressing can have one. The whole thing was such a bummer I haven’t purchased a Tidal Wave release since.

This was one of the albums I was thinking for FOMO day too. Love the story of it, but I haven't spun it in quite some time.

I got a Fat Beats email pushing a new /100 Tidal Wave reissue at basically the same time you posted this 😂

Day 7/8 twofer

In the interest of catching up, I’m going to post a couple records that I played yesterday but just happen to fit these themes!

Joseph Shabason - Anne

Lovely ambient jazz from a sax player you’ve likely heard before (Destroyer’s Kaputt or WOD Lost in a Dream). Fun fact, I actually learned about this album from one of these challenge threads last year!

Day 12 - FOMO buy you haven’t spun in a while

Fiona Apple - TIDAL

I wasn’t the biggest Fiona Apple fan when they repressed this, but seeing the internet go bananas about a possible repress made me take a look. I think I ordered this and Idler Wheel on the same day. Once I sat down with the album I realized what everyone was talking about. I played it a lot last fall. Haven’t really spun it since the new year, though. That changes today.
