May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

Day 4: Album from your senior year of high school
Jens Lekman - Oh, You're So Silent Jens

I was introduced to Jens by a girl in high school I had a HUGE crush on but she had a shitty boyfriend at the time. We reconnected after college and it was the first time we were both single since high school. We went on a date which made me realize that I didn't really like her at all anymore. But I'll always have Jens. He might be the musician I have seen the most live at this point.

Day 11: Album from a record club
Black Sabbath-Paranoid

Say what you will about that one record club, it is what introduced us to all these other fine people here. Funny 5 or so years ago this release brought me to it thinking of how cool it is, and now present me would have no appeal in buying a purple colored Black Sabbath record.IMG_20200511_112216.jpg

I had half a mind to fuss a little @Joe Mac but I have a similar vision there. That being said, there is something to be said for them bringing us altogether and for being a gateway to the hobby, which they seem to still be doing relatively well.

I mean there is definitely something to be said for that and at the end of the day they are just a shop, I just think that they are so bad at so many things and they get so much free publicity on here that I’m choosing not to do that and instead celebrate some of the other guys.

I agree with you. Wholeheartedly. Their faults and inability to (truly) recognize and resolve them is why I don’t give them any of my money or support anymore.

Day 11: Album you’ve gotten from a record club

So on to the best album in the world from a record club ever ...

Bell X1 “Neither Am I” from LovesVinyl in Dublin ...

hope they survive covid ..I stuck with them thru thick and thin and despite lots of probs they always responded ...sadly my U.K. membership became a bit of a problem in the end ..so a-due...we will always have Bell X1...even if it wasn't the second album!

Day 10: An album that makes you YEARN

Temples "Volcano"

I love this record, the beautiful melodies make me wanna dream, yearn and it feels so uplifting. 💗 Also it reminds me of when I was listening to it while being on a high floor balcony on some skyscraper (you know we don't have many of them in Europe) at Surfer's Paradise/ Australia, enjoying a magnificent view of the sea and sunrise.

Day 11: Album you’ve gotten from a record club

Notorious B. I. G. "Ready to die"

So this was one of the first records I got from VMP. That was in October 2017, and I'm glad that in a chain reaction the decision to buy from them did eventually send me to our wonderful forum 💗

So finally caught up and from tomorrow I will post the daily challenge on the right day 🙂

Day 10: An album that makes you YEARN

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

Almost this entire album is about yearning in some way or another. From reminiscing about staying up late watching old movies with his dad or remembering the days in her donut shop before the owner, Eleanor, passed in the opener "Glenn Tipton", to long lost loves in "Carry Me Ohio", this whole album covers all sorts of the ghosts we leave in our dust on the highways of our lives.

"Green green youth
What about the sweetness we knew
What about what's good what's true
From those days
Can't count to
All the lovers I've burned through
So why do I still burn for you
I can't say
Sorry that
I could never love you back
I could never care enough in these last days
Heal her soul, carry her, my angel, Ohio"

I got into this album shortly before moving to South Korea to teach when I was 24. The centrepiece of the album, "Duk Koo Kim", named for a young Korean boxer who died during his first ever fight outside Korea, always brings me back to the times I had while living there, and to yearn for them again.

"Sing to me once more, my love,
Words from your younger years
Sing to me once more, my love,
Songs that I love to hear."

It's also pretty close to a perfect record.
