May 2020 Record Challenge Thread (PRIZE RAFFLE AT THE END!)

Day 16: Play a long album (aim for over 60 minutes)

Aah the summer of 1987 ..a great year for me ..12 weeks hols discovered the joys of booze in the park and lots of great music ..and some very strong doubles ..a lot of 80’s bands hit their peak in 1987.. U2 “Joshua tree” started the ball rolling , Depeche Mode “Music for the Masses”, Prince “Sign o the times”, The Cure “Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me” and at the year end we got Springsteen’s “Tunnel of Love” and The Smiths final masterpiece “Strangeways...”

And somewhere in all that New Orcer released one of THE best ever double singles compilations along with their best ever single in “True Faith” ...aah to be young...

Hahaha! A compilaton 😂. Yes, that’s not going to he short lol!

I was actually surprised you didn't block the album I’m going to play later. When it was released I’m 1992 it was, at almost 80 minutes, pushing even the outer boundaries of even a CDs capacity. I’ve still two and half records of the white album package and yesterday to catch up on.

Mmm..that’s got me thinking ..a 1992 cd over 79 minutes .....has it had a vinyl repress?

A Discogs tip...if you download the Discogs Enhancer for Chrome it will add up track times for you...if they are entered.

Thats my very favourite album of all time ❤. What I love about it is that it’s pretty much a pure burst of creativity. For me when it hits few bands have been that effortlessly brilliant, even some songs thst might be deemed “throwaway” or “insignificant” are inspired. That said, when it misses (Revolution #9 and obla fucking di - obla fucking da) it also misses quite hard too 😂

No worries, @Joe Mac’s post was legally voided by his dissing of “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da.”

Bad bad Cod-Reggae 🤮🤮🤮. It vies with Maxwells Silver Hammer and Yellow Submarine as the worst Beatles song for me. I have far more of a defence for even Revolution #9 than it, at least that was trying to do something new.

PS. I think he was referring to gap beating him to the record, not my post, I was beaten to playing this one too!

Day 16 Loooooong enough for ya

So I had a few albums picked for today then after being lost by the PO for almost two months this guy finally showed up, so what better time to dive in. This thing is like a music history lesson .

I’m Gen X so over the years I’m sure I’ve heard the majority of these songs at some point but now I can sit back and put the bands names to the music. It was a very interesting time in U.S. history, and a ton of great tunes in here. There’s a lot of important stuff in this one and I’m glad I was able to grab it at such a cheap price .I’ll see you all on the other side eventually.

Day 14: Rated M for mature

I thought for awhile about this one. (especially since I'm three days behind)

I'm going with Fleetwood Mac - Rumors

What they went through during the making of this album, while still being able to complete this album...an all time great...shows a level of maturity that not everyone could attain. And as I see relationships all around me fall apart during this quarantine I was moved to play this I guess.

Here's a quote from Mick
“We refused to let our feelings derail our commitment to the music, no matter how complicated or intertwined they became,” Fleetwood later wrote in his 2014 memoir. “It was hard to do, but no matter what, we played through the hurt.”

LOL I like Maxwells Silver Hammer the lyrics are about a serial killer that clunks people in the head with a hammer but it's sang in such a happy way with a catchy chorus.

Full disclosure I grew up in a house that despised the Beatles. Later I found out it's because all the girls loved guys with those hair cuts and my dad couldn't grow his like that so he hated everything Beatles . He'll tell that story anytime a Beatles song comes on the radio, Eventually I started digging into them and started with the darker songs and Maxwells hammer was the 1st on that list.

You're with Paul, I’m with all of the other 3 beatles on that one, they hated the song and resented the time and money Paul made them all spend on it lol!

I grew up with them pretty much omnipresent, my dad loved music and they were his favourites.

Day 16: Play a long album (aim for over 60 minutes)

I still need to go back and do yesterday's prompt, but I ended work yesterday with the worst headache so there wasn't much music listening going on.

Per Wikipedia, this just makes it at 63 minutes (not including the third LP with the film score). I haven't connected with this album as much as their older albums yet, but the more I play it, the more I like it.

Day 15: An album that makes you laugh

Bob Dylan - Another Side Of Bob Dylan

I’m not really a fan of comedy in music tbh. Comedy is at its best when it’s topical, fresh and sharp for me and music’s real power is in its ability to transcend such things, that even when it’s topical the messages are bigger and more universal

That said I do like wit and Dylan’s use of words early on was electric! I can’t pretend that some of the prose, particularly on something like Motorpsycho Nightmare, doesn’t make me chuckle a little.

Sometimes I wonder how much my musical tastes would have changed if I grew up in a household that liked the Beatles. Plus my dad only listened to what is played on the radio he calls anything else underground music .
