DAY 13
UNLUCKY
Brockhampton -
iridescence
At the start of 2018, it seemed like Brockhampton were unstoppable. Coming off a trilogy of highly acclaimed albums that had earned them tons of hype and a growing fanbase, they'd also just landed a record deal with RCA. But that summer, the group's momentum was halted by the removal of Ameer Vann, one of the band's biggest contributors, over allegations of sexual abuse. This was a huge decision that clearly impacted the group in a big way, and while Ameer being kicked out was met with a lot of support, it was a controversial move to some and the weight of the choice still seems to loom over Brockhampton to this day.
This moment largely overshadowed the buzz for the band's upcoming major label debut, which would be delayed and retitled several times before finally being released in September of 2018. Brockhampton now had to prove they could still deliver a good album in spite of all the setbacks, on top of the pressure of putting out your first release on a major label.
iridescence was received fairly positively, but despite the band's best efforts it was often compared unfavorably to the
Saturation trilogy, and every release from the band since has followed suit. The backstory of the album, the album itself and its impact on the band all certainly seem unlucky, in many people's eyes turning Brockhampton from one of hip-hop's most promising and exciting up and coming collectives into a divisive group desperately trying to recapture the success of their previous work.
