May 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - A Crash Course for the Ravers

But there's a shop on the corner that's selling papier mache / Making bullet-proof faces, Charlie Manson, Cassius Clay
Play something with strange or non-sensical lyrics

The lyrics of "I Zimbra" are an adaptation of Dadaist Hugo Ball's poem Gadji beri bimba. Developed in reaction to World War I, the Dada movement consisted of artists who rejected the logic, reason, and aestheticism of modern capitalist society, instead expressing nonsense, irrationality, and anti-bourgeois protest in their works.

Nirvana - MTV Unplugged In New York

As a 12 or 13 year old Nirvana loving kid from a small town in the Central Illinois, I am sure I’d heard Bowie songs before Nirvana covered “The Man Who Sold The World” on MTV Unplugged but I would also say that I really didn’t get to know David Bowie as an artist until after being captivated by Kurt’s haunting rendition.

Reigning Sound - I Don't Need That Kind of Lovin - written by Chris Andrews
I knew Adam Faith with the Roulettes had a version, but I dug deeper and found a version by Sandie Shaw and another

Day 4 - Bombers
Seemed a good idea / To drop a bomb on the wasteland here
Bob Dylan ‎– Saved
20220507_093441.jpg

Certainly not Dylan's most beloved work by most, but I've always really loved this one despite not really being into the whole evangelical thing myself. Used to be a top 5 Dylan record for me; definitely still a top 10. His band absolutely RIPS on "Saved."

This was a 2021 RSD release that is all covers. The best of which is the cover of Portisheads Glory Box. Give it a listen and get lost...

This whole category coulda been dedicated to Bob Dylan Soy Bomb albums. I almost chose Self-Portrait.

My first instinct for the prompt was actually Club Ninja by Blue Öyster Cult but I don't have it on wax and can only spin CDs in my car (plus the case is in storage as I've just got CD booklets in the car). I was feeling stumped for a bit until I remembered most people don't like Saved!

Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John

How about an entire album of covers? Growing up I was a huge Olivia Newton-John fan and Juliana Hatfield does a great job honoring her with this album.

David Bowie - White Light/White Heat 7"
My 3rd Bowie purchase. I bought ChangesOne when I first saw the video for Let's Dance in early 1983, and then bought that album soon after it was released in April. The Ziggy movie and soundtrack was released in October 1983. I couldn't afford the 2xlp at the time but could afford the 7". White Light was a major song in his live repertoire, played at least once on every tour he did from 1968 until 2004.

Anthony Kiedis is no Bob Dylan.
"
've got a mellowship, I've got a fellowship
I've got a nonstop "yo swan" hello chip
Born to adore the big bad bison
Thunderstorm and a man like Tyson
Popcorn peanuts lookin' at big butts
No, I can not keep my mouth shut"

Great Collaborative Cover album. How they play Lou Reeds Perfect Day with the preservation hall jazz band in a parking lot is just sublime

"Oh I poked the no no
And they scold the wood Gipetto
Rigor mortis after coitus
You know they don’t wanna let go
Buddha rub the belly
R the Kelly, make ‘em echo loud
Get up off that, get up off that
Let go of my ego now"
