MoFi UltraDeck / StudioDeck Owners and those interested

You got in just under the wire. Upscale is showing the new price now.
Not surprised. I mentioned above that I bought immediately after reading that post here bc I didn’t want to wait for biz hours on Monday in case they raised it then.

It didn’t make sense that one shop had the old prices. My local shop had the new price, and that’s what I was going to buy. I feel bad for not buying local, and I like that shop. But they make plenty of $$$ (incl a bunch from me), especially during the pandemic, and I could not turn away a $500 savings.

Got a question for the MoFi crew. I've noticed that the vocals are a little less crisp than I'd like. I brighten the vocals up with a Bellari 4-band EQ, and it works fairly well. I'm just curious if this is the common sound profile for the MoFi StudioDeck? I don't think there is an issue with the turntable or cartridge as I just verified alignment via the GeoDisc and tracking force is set to 2.00g.

MasterTracker--> StudioDeck--> Darlington MM-6--> Rolls Bellari EQ570--> Yamaha A-S501--> KEF LS50 Meta
I don't know the extend of your TT experience, so forgive me if this sounds patronizing, but I suspect you'll find the overall turntable "voicing" to be almost completely dependent on your cartridge choice and setup. What cartridge are you currently running?

Not completely - I liken a cartridge to the pickups on an electric guitar (my two top hobbies, oof!). Swapping will drastically change voicing, but the instrument itself is still the vessel.

sometimes you can "call" dealers and get the old price if it has not been long. If they bought stock or ordered at the old price they would want a sale and give it to you.

Hoping you guys that ordered right before the change don't get your orders cancelled due to the price increase.🤞

That would be an atrocious mistake on their end, it would be losing a $2000-$2500 sale to clear an extra $500. Don’t know how many people with cancelled orders would be like “well it’s just another $500; I’ll just re-order!”

I do not have an extensive amount of TT experience. I have the MasterTracker that came with my StudioDeck.

In the past, with my old Pro-Ject, I had really liked the sound from a Nagaoka MP-110 and an Ortofon 2M Blue, which I'm assuming most people would consider "bright".

The 2M blue is towards the brighter end but it’s not the bronze or black which are BRIGHT! The Nagaoka’s are generally a warmer cartridge. If you get a chance a some point try out the Hana cartridges, they have a really nice neutral sound.

I do agree with @HayesWeighsIn in that a table does have a particular presentation of its own, it’s too physical and variable a medium for it not to.

I originally ran the MasterTracker on my UltraDeck. It was pretty much exactly as you described. Great cart for acoustic and most of my classical collection, but was a bit polite and didn't really have the "bite" I was looking for with the rest of my music. Fortunately, the StudioDeck is very accommodating to a lot of really great sounding and affordable cartridges that will fit your taste.

There's scads of threads all over the web with tons of user input to help with your research along with a cartridge thread here on Needles & Grooves. I think you'll find N&G one of the friendlier sources around, so don't hesitate to ask.

I had this same takeaway, but with the StudioTracker. What do you have on your UD now?

This is sort of a odd question that I have not been able to satisfactorily answer. I bought a Mofi StudioDeck +U in December of 2020 and It has been a joy to listen to and use. As I said I ordered the table with MoFi's UltraTracker cartridge. This is the confusing part. The cartridge I received looks like the MasterTracker with the dark gray body with white lettering. I have contacted both MusicDirect (where purchased) and Mobile Fidelity and received conflicting answers. MD has told me it is a MasterTracker and Mofi has told me once it was a MasterTracker and on a separate occasion that there was an engineering change and that it is a UltraTracker. I think the cantilever and stylus look like an UltraTracker, but I'm not positive. I've attached some pictures of the cartridge and stylus to see if any of you wizards can provide any insight.

Looks like a MasterTracker to me. The cosmetics are definitely MasterTracker. You’d need a microscope to see the difference in styli between a MasterTracker and an Uktratracker.

I would have no doubt someone may have misspoke when asked if it was a UT or MT, I would take this at "face value" and say it's a MasterTracker. Why you received it I have no idea, but I would be happy with the mix up.

The underlying tone of the conversation becomes addressing shenanigans under the hood so to speak, and I highly doubt that's what's happening ;)

Ultradeck Owners. I have an Ultradeck on order with no cartridge. I have contemplated starting out with a Grado Timbre Sonata3 MI cartridge.

I am wondering if folks on the forum have heard this combo? I am also wondering if a Grado is a good fit for the Ultradeck. I read somewhere they may not be a fit due to the motor type on the ultra deck.

I am wondering if there are thoughts from the group.

If Grado doesn't seem like a fit I may start probing about Hana carts. I see a lot of folks are using them to success!

I look forward to any input you may have.

Anthonyl - I did not intend for there to be an underlying tone, nor was I implying anything. I just would like to know what I have.

You'll have no issues with a Grado on the UD. I like Grado, but didn't care for the Sonata, oddly enough I REALLY liked the Opus3 on the UD, but my long term ended up being the Hana SL which I'm currently running.

Others I have and enjoyed on the UD are the Ortofon Quintet Blue and Denon DL-103R. I would reiterate that a lot of what a cart delivers boils down to personal preference AND the rest of the chain, so take ALL opinions with a grain of salt. You can hit up the Cartridge thread for some more detailed opinions of various options ;)

Not saying YOU implied anything, my comment is completely aimed at the manufacturer not you, lol. That said, I think you have a MasterTracker ;)

Here are a couple more stylus images. This is as good as my cheap little microscope can do.
