Movies

I stumbled across a really great film last night called 'Tunnel'.

It's a 2016 Korean film that's supposed to be based on real events and police reports from an accident in 2007. The premise is that a car salesman is driving home from work and enters a tunnel which then collapses. The rest of the plot is essentially the rescue attempt and how the media, politicians, the man's family and rescue workers deal with it.

One of my favourite films that I have seen this year so far and just looking online today it looks to have 100% on Rotten Tomatoe's currently.

Have you ever seen Ace in the Hole? Somewhat similar premise but with acidic comedy courtesy of Billy Wilder. Excellent film.

I think what I enjoyed about Space Jam back when it came out was that it felt like this absurd too-crazy-to-actually-happen magical wish fulfillment of a movie. Just the idea that Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time [and way more of a cultural icon then than Lebron is now] would do a kids movie with the Looney Tunes was WILD. The dude took himself pretty seriously and was worshipped - every printed image of him was viewed as Art. Not to mention that Charles Barkley and Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing were in it, too - that's like a third of the Dream Team. No one thought it had an amazing plot or really memorable character arcs - it was just the fact that they even tried to make a movie out of it that was incredibly exciting. Also, just visually it was a step forward in mixing live-action and cartoon characters in the same shots. Casper had come out the previous year - the first film to have a fully CGI character in the lead role (according to wikipedia). You can go back and watch these films now and not be at all impressed, but this was exciting, cutting-edge CGI at the time. Recycling those things for a sequel, though, isn’t going to be new or interesting now, 25 years later.

Annnd you had a multi-platinum-selling soundtrack featuring Seal, Coolio, R. Kelly, D'Angelo, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Method Man, Salt-N-Pepa, Jay-Z, Quad City DJs, Monica, Barry White, Chris Rock, etc.

Stars aligned and I had the time and attention span to watch a foreign-language film longer than 90 minutes, so I finally got around to Kurosawa's High and Low. Now that's a movie picture. The blocking is what really impressed me; for that first hour or so in the apartment, you never tire of being in one location because he does such a good job of adding/subtracting characters and changing their positions to match the drama.
On my list for the weekend tx!

I think I may have watched around 20 Kurosawa films this year alone (I'd have to check my lists to know total and this one is still in my top 5. So awesome! I could be two hours of just Toshiro Mifune answering phone calls and it would still be entertaining.

My Kurosawa knowledge is woefully slight; I've seen the 'hits' (Rashomon, Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Seven Samurai, Ran), but would love to know if you have any other personal standouts.

aside from High and Low, Ikiru and Throne of Blood rip.

I've been meaning to watch Red Beard and Derzu Uzala.

It's really tough for me to rank my favourites among his films because most of them are so good!
Some that I haven’t seen mentioned but would highly recommend are The Bad Sleep Well, Stray Dog, Kagemusha and The Lower Depths.

Local independent theater is opening back up this weekend, and the first movie they have is Minari (along with Nomadland). So glad I held out and get to see it in a theater.

We saw Minari this weekend at the Tower Theater here in Sacramento which just re-opened. Can't find anybody showing Nomadland yet.

The Bad Sleep Well kind of shocked me, I feel like I need to rewatch it to really grok it fully.

I watched Godzilla vs Kong last night followed by The New Mutants. Both are on HBO MAX.

I don't know if it was because I was tending to cooking dinner and a bit distracted, byt I was completely lost in Godzilla vs King. The movie seemed like all action to me and not explanation of the plot. Did I miss something crucial or is this a sequel or something?

The New Mutants was decent, nothing special. I spent most of the movie wondering why one of the actresses looks some familiar and where I knew her from. Turns out she played the lead in The Queen's Gambit that I recently watched.
