Movies

Dolby is the way to go. Still looked good at my theater but a brighter screen is ideal since the glasses darken the image a bit. The first time they hop in the water will break your brain.
We have an amazing Dual Laser IMAX nearby at the Smithsonian, but apparently due to the way those projectors work it’s in 2k and not HDR. :/

That place is normally my go-to for big tentpoles.

Saw Avatar Way Of Water in IMAX today. I had low expectations and I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised. I remember being so disappointed with the first one. I just didn’t like it at all. But this one looked so much better. I think the first part of the movie is the weakest, but once they get to the water it really takes off. All those water scenes are incredible. The climactic final act is huge and totally absorbing.

My issues mainly are in the simplicity of the story, especially in regards to the…revenge angle. I just didn’t care much about that. But what a blockbuster should be is a huge spectacle that entertains and engages and I think this definitely did that for me. So I can forgive some simple, overused plot elements. Also it is just over 3 hours but honestly the only part I felt bored with was the beginning.

I never saw the first one, so I have no desire to see this one but what made you want to see the new one if you didn't like the original at all?

Yeah I can’t explain really. Similar to the first, I just wanted to be impressed? I wanted to see what the big deal is? I guess I saw it as maybe the opportunity to live up to the hype of the original. Also, this is going to sound dumb, but I love looking at water in film. I have seen some of those nature underwater documentaries in our local IMAX theater and always enjoyed them. I know this isn’t real water, but it seemed like a cool thing to see on a giant screen and if I was going to ever see it I would just rather go all out and see it on an IMAX screen than at home. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This coulda been such a fun movie but the over reliance on CGI really killed the vibe. I was hoping for more of a Romancing The Stone/Early Indiana Jones type movie, Instead it ended up more like a Pirates of The Caribbean knockoff. The Rock and Emily Blount have great chemistry though.

my thoughts are pretty much the same as yours re: the amount of cgi and blunt/rock, but i still thought it was better and more fun than it probably had any right to be.

Just finished Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and the making of featurette. Totally charming. Joins the ranks of Cabaret and The Sound of Music as an explicit work of (musically inclined) cinema against fascism (par for the course with GdT), of which there is never enough of, so I'm 100% here for it. As such, it didn't even have to be as painstakingly well crafted as it is, but a hearty "Hell yeah!" to its workmanship.
