Movies

I already have it. It was included in the 4K release on a separate blu-ray disc. I just don't understand why they didn't put it on a 4K disc as well since many people prefer that cut to the theatrical.

Thanks, though 🙂
It is weird! The discs aren’t even that different to manufacture!

The Menu is fine. Subtlety isn’t its finest suit. A lot of finger waiving at the excesses of the rich and wealthy or pseduo intellectualism that’s eating away at the desire to create art. The movie robs us of discovering any depth to the guests since they’re written so broadly. I know, it’s a comedy but the jokes are self congratulatory for the audience: “hey, at least we’re not superficial like those folks” is at the core of many of the visual comedic cues in the movie. I feel like the exposition was too broad and didn’t allow us look at the guests as anything more than punching bags towards critics or corrupt politicians or perverts or crooks. I know, it’s a comedy but… sigh, whatever, Ralph Finnes is good in it. Nicholas Hoult is a delightful shit eater.

The prequels had a story to tell but botched the execution while the post-trilogy was completely superfluous but the filmmakers made better choices in telling the flimsy story they had.

The Rise of Darth Vader it could have been a Breaking Bad-esque story of a golden boy turning to the dark side. They spent too much time focusing on Anakin as a young kid. The first movie does not add enough to the story justify its existence. I know Star Wars isn’t The Godfather but the Godfather (heck, even The Joker) proves you can tell the story of a seemingly good person being corrupted into a monster within a film without making the turn seem stilted and unearned. They needed a whole movie that primarily focused on Anakin and Queen Amidala relationship. Their relationship felt like an afterthought for two and a half films and then they want audience to buy in to his tragic loss as away to justify his turn. There is so much wasted potential in the prequels.

The post-trilogy was pointless but storytelling within the context of that pointless story was more in line with the original trilogy. Problem is why watch a lesser quality copy when the original is there and is better in every way.

Oh God. You crazy masochist. Hayden Christiansen and Nathalie Portman had zero chemistry. It was so painful and so wooden. Lucas’ dialogue was kinda odd and stilted but I think those two wood have made Romeo and Juliet seem dry.

I'd say the problem was J.J. Abrams, but I know that might start some arguments.

Nope you’re right. I can forgive Awakens it was kinda fun pointless nostalgia. But Skywalker is the biggest pile of shit ever committed to film. It’s staggeringly bad.

The issue I was describing had more to do with story/plot. I agree those scenes were stilted and awkward with zero chemistry. I feel to make a story about Anakin becoming Darth work they needed they audience to care about their relationship enough and his tragic loss to justify the turn. So in that regard, I completely agree that better chemistry between those characters would be essential to the prequels working.

Been trying to catch up on the big films I missed over the past…almost decade? First up was Birdman. I loved the feel of the movie. The one shot trickery was really nice and I think the drum score just added so much. But looking back on it, did it make a huge impact on me from a story perspective? Not as much.

I’m about to finish The Irishman. I never thought I’d have time to watch such a long movie but I’ve found the time. I’m at the last half hour now, but won’t be able to finish till tonight. I enjoy it, especially from like a big director getting to do what he wants.

I’m not sure what to check out next. I was thinking Shape of Water. Never saw that one either. Or Blackkklansman.

Art is subjective but here is my end-of-decade-list.

I worked in editing departments of different varieties from 11-18' before the hours of the industry started to cause health problems so I'm biased... but in my book the 10's sit alongside the 70s and 90s as a high watermark in the history of cinema if you like independent film / character studies.

The fact that digital cameras got so good and so cheap enabled a 10 year boom before the rise of streaming services and the financial force of Marvel completely upended things.

NOTE- I made this list during the beginning of the pandemic. There is probably stuff I've seen since that I failed to add but should be here. And there's definitely stuff in the 2nd half of the list I'd move around.
