Movies

I'm finally getting around to watching the last Indiana Jones and I'm really enjoying it so far. Much better than I was expecting.
Yeah, I think the Crystal Skull was such a let down that this one ended up being a very fun surprise.

The CGI de-ageing affect was a little weird, it turned some of that Train sequence into a video game territory.

The other than that I really enjoyed it and could see myself watching it again.

I missed Spielberg’s direction way too much. I watched Crystal Skull for the first time the day before seeing Dial of Destiny and while I admit the MacGuffin kind of sucks, it *feels* like Indiana Jones to me. There are only a couple of moments in Dial where I got that same buzz.

The things I associate with Indiana Jones movies were all there; globetrotting (DOD goes from Germany, to NYC, To Tangier, to Greece and Sicily. The only locations we get in Crystal Skull are Roswell and Puru), mythical ruins, evil Nazis, exciting chases, etc… I enjoyed PWB more than Shia LeBeouf, and baddies of Madds Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook were great as well. Also, as distracting as some of the de-aging CGI was in DOD it was way less cringy than the CGI monkeys in chase sequence in Crystal Skull.

I think the biggest thing though was expectations. I was super pumped for Crystal Skull, I watched Crystal Skull at the theater opening night and was fairly disappointed whereas I happened to catch Dial Of Destiny on the back of the seat in front of me on an airplane flight and even with all of that taken into account I still enjoyed Dial of Destiny more.

I do admire how wild the last half hour of DoD gets.

The original, Love Affair, is much the same. AFTR is a bit funnier (Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr are great) but there were a few scenes i thought were better in Love Affair.
Grant and Kerr really carry the film through its rough patches. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen Love Affair. I should remedy that.

I think it's the first time I post here. Yesterday I watched a French/Belgium movie called En Attendant Bojangles (Waiting for Bojangles). Movie is inspired a book which is inspired by the young years of the author.

I've not been that moved by a movie. The story is joyful, sad, lovely and tragic. I enjoyed every moment and then cried like a baby after these 120 minutes of movie.

Enjoy!

I have my IMAX tickets for The Boy And The Heron this Friday. I don't think I've anticipated a movie this highly in a while. Unfortunately, I think the local IMAX theater is showing the dub, but it's unclear. So I guess we'll see.

we're doing the alamo showing on sunday. trying to avoid reviews and blurbs on it, but what i have unavoidably seen/heard in headlines and things seems promising.

we're also going to an alamo screening of batman returns next week, and then the iron claw special screening. excited about both.

I have seen the teaser but nothing else. Trying to go in as fresh as possible.

I’m also looking forward to Poor Things, but no idea when that’ll be here. Looks like they already have some screenings up for The Iron Claw in a couple of weeks though.

Can I just put on record how stupid region protection is on Blu Rays. Saw a film I wanted to watch the library (Jodorowsky’s Dune), rented it, but as it’s a region A disc I can’t play it on my players. I’m actually having to pirate it to watch it. So frustrating.
That drives me nuts too. But on the plus side that's a great documentary. I went and saw it in theaters.

It's due to copyright holders. Disney could own the rights for a film in the US but Universal have the rights in the EU for example. It's been like that from VHS to blu-ray, although it's kinda funny that all 4K discs are region free. That does create a bit of an issue when the accompanying blu-ray disc is region locked.
The only issue i have with region coding is that i can't trade in region A titles at one of the buy/sell/trade stores lol
