Movies

I think Life Aquatic showed some wobbliness (the maudlin tone is really at odds with the deep-sea adventure aesthetic, and the Ned storyline is a little weird!) and only revisited Darjeeling once but it carried a similar set of obtuse emotional scars in tandem with a somewhat-uncomfortable leveraging of a complex culture into a cute aesthetic which, at the time, had me thinking Wes was cooked. IMO pivoting into animation was really good for giving him a chance to refine his eye for detail (and let the control freak run wild) while also leveling up his action/pacing chops. When he came back with Moonrise Kingdom (which is something like a live-action Peanuts special) I felt like he'd truly leveled up.
loooooove Moonrise Kingdom.

Completely agree with this.

I absolutely adore this movie. Saw it back in 2005 at the Asian Film Festival here in Dallas. My brother and I would buy passes and went every year until it was too difficult to make it work around kids schedules. We saw a double feature of Infernal Affairs 1 & 2. I enjoy The Departed but this really set the standard for me. I think I still have the t-shirt I bought from the AFFD merch table back then.

Just finished Under Paris. 🦈🇫🇷

It's no Deep Blue Sea, but it's thankfully better than The Meg + Meg 2.

If Gens keeps his trajectory on the path it is, he'll direct a movie I actually love in the next several years. I only recalled after logging this movie that he was also responsible for Cold Skin and the contemptible (though divisive) Frontier(s).

The book for Cold Skin was amazing. The movie didn't live up to it.

It's funny because I'm the complete opposite of this. I felt like he lost his way with the turn to animation and his storytelling was seriously dulled as a result. Moonrise Kingdom was a partial return to form, but still felt like he was trying to recapture what he lost from his early and more adventurous/original style of film making. He went too safe and lost the edge that made his work stand out to me in the first place. I enjoy them for what they are but none have had any emotional impact or been much more than a stylistic vibe for me since then.

I have a free ticket to Maxxxine for its opening weekend courtesy of A24 if anyone wants it. I already have a ticket to see it at an early screening, so I figured I’d offer it here. It has to be for the opening weekend though. Also because of my location it is only showing me AMC theaters, but it can be used for AMC, Alamo, Regal, and Marcus. If you claim it and want one of those theaters you might have to let me know which chain and what city you’re seeing it in. The codes are different for all of them apparently.
