You love to see it.

I kinda wonder if our local Alamos will be seeing any upgrades. It's ironic that they have been acquired by Sony, when Sony stopped making 4K Digital Cinema projectors in 2020.
I'm very happy that the old employees will be made whole and if rehired, they'll get better employee benefits which I assume was either what Alamo corporate offers or Sony can offer since they are such a massive company. I'd imagine the old benefits were through the franchisee and he supposedly sucked really badly and it was causing a lot of strife with the employees.
As far as upgrades, the one in Richardson was actually getting money through a city of Richardson run initiative to upgrade the theater as it is a major economic driver in that area. The Alamo when it opened there was put into a dead shopping center and it revived the whole area and really made it a destination for people to move to in the surrounding neighborhoods. There was talk that Richardson was going to work to get the theater from the debt holder under their control because of the millions they had sunk into renovations. The city of Dallas also was paying to help upgrade the Cedars location but I'm not sure of the full details.

This is from the Alamo site:

Beyond simply reopening the theaters, Alamo Drafthouse plans to implement a number of improvements and upgrades to several of the venues. Current plans include state-of-the-art 4K laser projectors and Dolby Atmos sound in a new The Big Show auditorium – Alamo Drafthouse’s premium large format experience – at the Richardson location by Labor Day. At Las Colinas, we will be adding premium recliner seats and 4K laser projectors in time for the Spring 2025 movies.

Before the theaters reopen, Alamo Drafthouse will host a hiring fair for past employees on July 23rd, at the Lake Highlands and Woodbury locations, both to make them whole for lost wages that they were owed before the closure and to give them first access to interviews for open positions. Those who are rehired will receive a more robust benefits plan with immediate eligibility, including access to daily pay, substantial 401k match, paid medical leave, accrued PTO, free mental health services.

“Our number one goal throughout this difficult period has been to do right by the former teammates and get back to providing the exceptional cinema experience our guests deserve,” said Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann. “We’re thrilled to say that that goal is in sight and that we’ll have teammates and guests back in those theaters very soon.”

Each location will host a soft opening celebration for the first two weeks after opening. Guests will enjoy $5 tickets for all shows and 25% off select food and beverage items. Programming for the soft opening includes some of the most anticipated films of the summer, including DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, IT ENDS WITH US, ALIEN: ROMULUS and BLINK TWICE.

Guests who purchased tickets before the shutdown will receive free ticket rainchecks via email once tickets go on sale. Additionally, previously purchased merchandise for INSIDE OUT 2 and DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE will be distributed to guests during the soft opening period. Season Pass members affected by the closure will also be given the opportunity to reactivate their account and receive two months free for doing so once tickets for their preferred theater go on sale.

The Alamos in my area all use Sony 4K Digital Projectors, so I just thought it was a little funny that any potential upgrades would mean Sony having to bin their own equipment. I realize Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony the professional equipment manufacturer are not the same, but still.

Halfway through the year, an update on my favorite films of 2024. It's been a "smaller" year due to the strikes but also a good year for American Indies:

Tier 1: *****
1. I Saw the TV Glow

(I don't know that I would call I Saw the TV Glow a perfect film, but I'm certain that it's the only 2024 film to melt me into the couch like lukewarm nacho cheese on a dog hair ridden rug. Equal parts hypnotic & horrifying; gorgeous & grotesque... I Saw the TV Glow will hit everyone differently but leave a deep bruise regardless.)

Tier 2: ****1/2
2. Civil War
3. Dune Part II
4. Mad Max Furiosa

Tier 3: ****
5. Love Lies Bleeding
6. The Bikeriders
7. Challengers
8. Hitman

Tier 4: ***1/2
9. Monkey Man
10. Maxxxine
11. Snack Shack
12. Sasquatch Sunset

Most disappointing film- Drive Away Dolls
Give me my 2 hours back- Self Reliance
Film I still need to see- Kinds of Kindness
Film I'm most looking forward to- Anora

I rewatched this one a couple months ago. The humor and performances hold up. Any idea that the two of them would wind up together or that she would entertain the idea of being with him... not so much. As a teen I probably would have given it 5 stars. Now it's more like a 3.5 for me. Broadcast News on the other hand-- that film just gets better as time passes.

Also, good to be back everyone. Guess I'm gonna have to a lot of digging to do (on a day that I'm not attending Pitchfork). I was laid off in mid Jan and disappeared off the map for a while, then got a new (better) job in May and have been focused on keeping my feet underneath me.

This one hits HULU on the 23rd, but I wanted to tune into the director commentary stream for Sohome Horror Pride online film festival tomorrow, so I went ahead and outright bought this one on good word... and it sure as hell didn't disappoint!

Femme is a thoroughly suspenseful thriller in which an assaulted drag artist later plots revenge against their closeted attacker who doesn't recognize their DL hookup outside of their drag getup.

This has such a tight script and kept me strung from start to finish. MacKay is fantastic in this really intense villainous role (no surprise).

This plays super smartly with controversial themes and doesn't give in to otherwise easy conclusions, which really ratcheted up my satisfaction.

Def one of my tops of the year alongside TV Glow and ahead of The Devil's Bath.

This is a pretty fun afternoon movie.

Trying to catch up on all the oddball Cage films of late. First up: Dream Scenario.

This one feels a bit like a Black Mirror episode with a bigger budget. Cage turns in a strong performance and seems to channel his Adaptation performance a bit. The first hour was an intriguing watch with the last half hour or so descending into anxiety-inducing chaos as many A24 films are known to do. This film has a lot to say about where society is heading and I feel it’ll age well as technology sinks its roots deeper, making our social lives more complicated.
