Needles & Grooves AoTM : General thread & archive

Agree on this. Keeping it unofficial amongst yourselves is great. But things start getting printed and we’re into legal areas that we’re not ready for. I don’t know where N&G can go but as far as the name and branding, we want to be more intentional, especially when it comes time to find ways to keep this place funded and ad-free. Being a rotm club may not be the best direction for us.

So right now we think a book club style discussion is great, fun guess thread, album discussion. All great. Branding it is getting too far ahead of what we’re ready for.
Amen! Keep it simple! :)

i guess we do get a bit over our heads....

i dont think we have any intentions of being official, we're just offering some fun things, even without the branding. just for some fun with the community

It's fine if we aren't completely official by N+G.. the fauxbis are just a fun thing we can do if we like them and even if they don't have a logo on them (at first), a book club style thing where the person giving the record can do a fun add-on if they want is nice

Like for mine im definitely doing a fauxbi and an essay, but maybe even do more if I'm allowed to
Happy to make you a non-N+G affiliated, non branded, unofficial fauxbi

lol, flashbacks to Pauly!

Yeah we'd like to wait on any kind of printable branding, especially using a logo (that doesn't even exist yet) or the like.

I would also like to encourage people to participate even if they don't want to do everything you're outlining. I think if someone wants to run a guess thread and pick a record they should be encouraged, even if they don't post listening notes or find unique pictures. I think running the thread and providing a personal essay or statement on why they chose it should be good enough. But that will be more up to you all.

The idea wasn't to sell anything, at least in my mind, the idea of having a "fauxbi" was just to provide a little perk to it, but just a pdf file to be printed, or not, by participants. I'll follow your lead, but I don't think this simple thing could lead to legal trouble. :)

I got you. I got freaked out when someone said labels being contacted and club. It’s when we have the eventuality of trademarking that we have to be careful of the name and how it’s used. We’re trying to think ahead which is why we want folks to slow down. That’s all.

From my side, I never thought about contacting the label and/or sell the record under our forum's name. Tbh I never thought about all the legal aspects but now I understand your worries. What I plan to do on May 31st is to reveal the record I picked, share links to interviews and reviews that can be found on Internet, share links to shops where the record can be bought and explain in my bad English why I picked the record. That's it.

Thanks for the heads up on the legal aspect though, it's important for us to keep this in mind. We are doing a test run and have to figure out how we can do this as simple as possible. If you want that we put this AoTM thing on hold, we'll put this on hold. The last thing I (and certainly all of us members) want is to cause any problem to the forum or to the staff.

I think you’re good. If it evolves to something we get concerned with we’ll check in with all of you and talk it out.

have these words on the fauxbi
100%, I think an obi or fauxbi is something common in the industry, but clearly, we should not aim to be close to VMP's fauxbi at all, but I'm sure the good folks here will come up with a great design.
My only thought on this awesome book club style idea is that some categorisation will help to stop amazing suggestions being buried under all the enthusiasm. So, a country thread, an indie thread, a classical thread, jazz, blues, hip hop, house, drum and bass etc. It doesn’t need to get too niche, but I do think we have the opportunity to go far wider than just one monthly thread. Oh and also, a rule that the record of the month is accessible to streaming in some manner, YouTube, Spotify etc so that anyone without funds or access to the record can still engage in the discussion please.

I think the book club idea is right, we could just do something standard like a write up of why this was selected, people could choose to print it on their own - I think the fauxbi (if this grows in the future) is still too close to what others are doing and if we do end up doing more it should be unique

I think focusing on discussion vs. add-ons is a better approach as well. You could even do picks for different genres each month, so people would have a couple of options of where to participate... yeah, basically like VMP's tracks, I know.🤷‍♂️

What about just get the picker to write up, say 2 sides of a page or draw or whatever, which can be printed out and slipped in the sleeve. Post it when announced as a pdf or something, two scanned photos, whatever. Gives a little link with the club and the person who picked. Doesn’t need to be massive prose but would nicely personalise things and make it a little more special.

Again I think people can do what they want but it should not be required. I think writing something up on the forum should be good enough.

We want people to put thought into it but I don't want to exclude people and only have 'super users' be able to participate.

I like the idea that it isn’t just ‘super users’ @gouis has here. Variety will definitely be key. I’ll be happy as an international to get my record at the same time as the US fans
