Needles & Grooves AoTM /// Vol. 2 - August 2019 /// Khemmis - Hunted

Was not familiar with Green Druids but based on the recommendation I downloaded the LP to listen to while doing yard work and you weren’t kiddin’ this record is great. After I mowed I decided I needed a copy on vinyl but it seemed to be sold out at both the bands Bandcamp and the label. The Green variant was a bit too pricey on discogs (cheapest copy was over $50) their was one black copy on discogs that was listed for $24 but I would have still had to pay shipping so I was on the fence. I took a flyer and checked my local shops online store and Lo & behold they had a copy for $24!... so a quick scooter ride later and BOOM!...

I read the sticker and had to listen to this. Very, very nice!

Damn, the standard black vinyl copy seemed to be hovering around $14-18 on Amazon late last year. Should have bought it then.

Can’t seem to find one cheaper than $26 plus shipping now...

Right! I was surprised to find a copy locally after scouring the interweb for the better part of an hour the other day. There was only a single listing on Discogs from a US retailer for a semi reasonable price.

This whole thread (coinciding with being pissed off at work last week) really has me hitting the metal hard. I go through phases with sub genres (country/soul/funk/etc...) but hadn’t listened to too much metal over the past 12 months or so but This has helped me realized as far as loud aggressive guitar based music goes metal really scratched an itch. I mean, I just ordered a copy of “Vulgar Display of Power” on wax and am thinking about picking up a Big Business record and Red Fang’s Self-titled debut on wax too cuz they’re fairly cheap and super awesome.

This thread made me go down a BABYMETAL hole I’m still trying to climb out of. KARATE!

Is it weird that as a non metal person I have an easier time with the High on Fire vocals than the Khemmis vocals?

I am in the same group as you. I’m enjoying Khemmis and have preordered it but i’ll Never be a lover of growl vocals. It sounds like the growler is saying ‘POO-POO’ to my ears when he appears on the second track. His growling is much better on the third track where I can identify words. I’ve listened again and still hear ‘POO-POO’ which is pretty extreme. You don’t get Metallica singing about faceses. Unless Lou Reed is fronting them. It’s ironic that fans of growl metal vocals were so vocal in condemning Lou Reed’s vocals on Lulu as being hard to listen to.

I bought Khemmis on allyourmusic on eBay. They had the cheapest price to send to the UK and if you bought 3 albums you would get a further 15% off so I picked it up, John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band (More screaming and raw vocals) and Ride The Lightning (which this album got me listening to again) for £45, which was nice.

Looking at the lyrics while listening to growls opened the door to me back when I was getting into more extreme vocals in the early 2000’s.

It is amazing how the filthiest, dirtiest, incomprehensible lyrics come out clear as day when you are following along with the lyric sheet.
