Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

Hobby Lobby is unbelievable.

As of today all their stores will finally be closed nationwide. They are still publicly claiming they stand by their classification as an essential business. They are blaming the government for having to furlough most of their workers.

I guess they aren't interested in that stimulus to keep their employees on payroll at all. At least on the bright side is most all of the hourly employees they furloughed will make more with the expanded unemployment benefits than if they were still employed at Hobby Lobby.

The amount of mismanagement going on mind boggling.

Illinois is in desperate need of ventilators. They tried ordering some from the federal stockpile but were told the federal stockpile is not for the states and that they should be ordering their own. Essentially, it's up to the federal government where and when they are used. And they are not sending any to Illinois as of yet.

At the same time Illinois also had placed an order for ventilators from the private sector as well. They were trying both angles at the same time to secure ventilators.

That order from the private sector was canceled because FEMA came in and seized/intercepted and bought the ventilators for the federal stockpile.

So essentially Illinois is being told the ventilators in the federal stockpile are not for you, buy your own. Yet when they try to their orders are being intercepted. End of the day, they have not been able to secure more ventilators.

COVID-19, hypertension and hypertension medication (ACE inhibitors and ARBs)

I've been reading a lot about a possible link between ACE inhibitors and hypertension with COVID-19. I've been taking one such medication for many years and my pressure had been beautiful for a while. Nevertheless, the reports coming out a few weeks ago, all of which were just theoretical, were concerning.

ACE inhibitors control hypertention by inhibiting ACE1, which converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II. ARBs are another class of hypertension drugs that affect the same pathway but by inhibiting the angiotensin receptor. They don't act on ACE2 directly. As some of you may know, SARS-CoV-2 enters human cells by binding to ACE2. The theory was that ACE inhibitors, ARBs and possibly hypertension in general, cause an increase in cellular levels of ACE2 indirectly and therefore help SARS-CoV-2 infection. None of this was proven, but it caused a shitstorm with lots of patients calling their doctors. I did a lot of reading myself. Recommendations were to not change anything because the danger of stopping those meds is great and changing them once you find one that works can take a lot of time for a doctor and a patient (and you want to avoid diverting doctor resources right now for a hypothetical).

Turns out, the opposite may be true. This was another theory floating around at the time and may actually be panning out, to my relief. ACE Inhibitors and ARBs may actually be protecting against SARS-CoV-2. Recent studies in cells in two separate labs are confirming this.

Anyway, this is ongoing and who knows where it will lead. Thought I'd share in case there are others here taking those medications and wanting more information.

If any of you have more information or wish to clarify anything here, please share.

For interest's sake, here is the biochemical pathway in question:

Another potential promising therapeutic avenue is a drug that mimics ACE2. Such drugs would basically sequester SARS-CoV-2 away from cells and prevent entry.

This map essentially shows where Americans did not stay home and traveled more often than what was essential. Meaning other than buying essential goods, food and going to work.

Are you sure it doesn't include all movement? I don't know how they would be able to remove going to the store and/or work.
