**I don't know if this is actually coming out or not but it was the release date given in a recent Forbes article, so I'm placing it on the list in hopes it does actually arrive despite minimal indication or mention of it anywhere else.

A possibly little known fact about me, I really like Dave Grohl, so much so in fact that I actually like every Foo album (except for Concrete and Gold which is still a giant beige blob of boring). Anywho, not too long ago, I watched the From the Cradle to the Stage Docuseries. There was an episode about Dan Reynolds and I actually grew to respect him despite the fact that I find Imagine Dragons' music not for me. They fall in the lowest rung of musical acts for me.

(I try hard to not throw too much shade or vitrioI at art - this dates back to my few years writing comic book criticism, I don't think anyone is trying to make art that sucks. Also, art tends to be personal and tied to emotions; there is no reason to upset folks too much. Don't get me wrong there is a certain amount of fun in ripping something to shreds, but it isn't conducive to an adult conversation about art and I still avoid it to this day. I also don't think there is anything wrong with someone liking art that others don't - belittling folks for their taste isn't cool though.)

I thought about spending some time listening to them after seeing the episode. However, I did not do that. I have to admit, when I saw there was a new album, I was kind of excited to give them another chance. I made it four songs into Vol 2 of whatever it is called before I realized that I still don't like their music (work is a little intense right now). I actually think he is a pretty cool dude with a very interesting story and I love his convictions all the way around, but his music is not for me.

Incidentally, the Foos fall into a category with Tom Petty, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings where I had ample opportunity to see them live but never made the effort to get to see them, pretty much because I thought there would be more time. I actually planned on seeing their show in Raleigh this summer, but alas... :(

This is largely how I look at art/music. I don’t like to rip any art to shreds because I do see it as someone wanting to put themselves out there, which I think does deserve some respect.

I was lucky to see them in 2003. I’m sad that I won’t get to again.

Didn't listen to much on this first week of Q3, but again with me being an easy grader...

🔥
  • Felicia Atkinson - Image Langage [now see...THIS is the first electroacoustic release to grab me this year. It has some unsettling passages, but I believe they are integral to the flow of the album. Was an excellent choice to have taken a walk to earlier today!]
  • Moor Mother - Jazz Codes [hell yes; litany of features that are all cohesive]
👍
  • Akusmi - Fleeting Future [an apt album title for the music contained within]
  • Conjurer - Páthos [not the most ardent metalcore supporter, but this is good. Thanks for this and the one directly below, @musicjunkiegreg]
  • Giraffes? Giraffes! - Death Breath [while I don't think this is one of the best albums this year, it bears enough creativity to earn a spot here]
  • Momma - Household Name [went into this expecting to be disappointed...glad to have given it a chance. Should have decent staying power]
  • MUNA - MUNA [think HAIM, but going all in on pop. A couple of duds in tracklist,"No Idea" in particular. Perfect for summer; harmless ☀️🏖️]
  • Sessa - Estrela Acesa [whimsical, carefree bossa nova. Good!]
🤷‍♂️
  • soccer mommy - Sometimes, Forever [not feeling it much. I wish there was more clear input from OPN than just a few tracks]
👎

None.
🤮

None. A solid start to the back half of the year.

Thanks for the shout outs, glad you enjoyed those two albums! I'm also glad you got more out of the Moor Mother album than I did.. I share your sentiments on the soccer mommy album, though it seems many others enjoyed it a lot more.. I missed the Felicia Atkinson album, and, based on your write up, I'm excited to add it to my list for listening this weekend! 🎧

Happy NMF! First up for me, grindcore and coffee. 🤘☕️ The Singaporean trio  Wormrot is back after 6 years with their fourth LP,  Hiss. Admittedly, I don't listen to a lot of grindcore, and this album surely won't be for everyone, but I found it quite enjoyable. One minute you're being clobbered with the speed and ferocity of their grindcore style, but the next you hit with a throwback 80s thrash riff or a chuggy melodic bit. And on top of that, the band employs at least five different vocal styles across its 21 tracks. There's plenty of variety on this one to keep it interesting. Track 10 "Seizures" has a perfect mix of everything, for example.

🔥
  • Petrol Girls - Baby [with the highest judicial court bullshit, this was released at the absolute perfect time. I think I've determined that I dig riot grrl tunes a lot given the preceding sentence. "Baby, I Had an Abortion" had me rekt]
  • Regina Spektor - Home, Before and After [yeah...you guys are right. My first time listening to her]
  • Zola Jesus - Arkhon [you know that I love my art pop...especially when the focus is on atmosphere]
I must have missed this post of yours from last week. As you've already seen my June, Q2, and mid-year lists, you know I completely agree with all three of these albums being in the 🔥 tier!

From Bristol, UK, Katy J Pearson is back with her sophomore album Sound Of The Morning. This 11-track outing of indie pop and alternative styles was a welcomed surprise, as this is my first experience with Katy's music. Her voice, to my ears, is a blend of Joanna Newsom, Adrianne Lenker, and someone else who I just can't put my finger on.. I feel like this one will be very well accepted by a lot of folks on here. I definitely recommend checking this one out today.

in a weird way both of these are right up my alley. I'll be checking both of these out today - thank you!!

EDIT: getting some Caroline Rose vibes from the Katy J Pearson album too.
