New Music Friday!

So, pardon my delay but I was moving last week so I didn’t get to new releases, but when the physical of Spellling showed up yesterday, I remembered that it existed. I would say that this is a &strong album. Not sure if it’s as amazing as The Turning Wheel, but I’m five songs in and it’s really strong.
I like it too even though technically not a 🆕 album but rather reimagined versions of songs off of her first three albums.

Haven't updated in five weeks with the little I have listened to. Might as well now.

🔥
  • Carly Rae Jepsen - The Loveliest Time [her best effort since E•MO•TION: Side B. That stretch from "Shy Boy" to "Put it to Rest" is godtier and has wonderful replay value. I just wish the opener "Anything to Be With You" didn't give the album a bad first impression with it's annoying intro/chorus]
  • Jessy Lanza - Love Hallucination [continuing her transcendent, leftfield electronic pop magic. She mixes in some footwork on "Big Pink Rose," one of my favorite songs of the year!]
(y)
  • Aphex Twin - Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760 (EP) [obvi good]
  • Natural Wonder Beauty Concept - Natural Wonder Beauty Concept [good, but I prefer Ana Roxanne's own vision]
  • ODD EYE CIRCLE - Version Up (EP) [one of the best K-Pop groups returns after a long haitus and I feel it was worth the wait]
🤷‍♂️
  • George Clanton - Ohh Rap I Ya [fine, but not a very replayable record. Vaporwave starting to lose its edge...]
  • Victoria Monét - JAGUAR II [runs out of steam REAL quick after "Smoke (Reprise)"]
  • Genesis Owusu - Struggler [this hurts. Because really, there is an artistic spontaneity to much of Smiling With No Teeth that even the best songs here fail to capture. I will say that his attempt on classic soul ("See Ya There" and "Stuck to the Fan") is well done. However, the dancey punk angle wears thin by the album's second half. I think that, ultimately, this album revealed his weaknesses on the subgenre of punk with repetitive songwriting. Not you too, melonhead 😡]
👎
  • Noname - Sundial [fuck Jay Electronica. Almost everything Noname says on this record (or perhaps even has said) rings hollow because of his inclusion. BNM? More like SMH]

Geez, just take all the albums.... 🤣

Totally agree that this is her strongest since emotion! I wasn’t at all hyped for this since “loneliest time” was such a meh album but holy shit she knocked it out of the park! The 1 2 punch of “psychedelic switch” and “so right” is probably the best in her discography!

I actually really like “anything to be with you” but I do agree it’s a bad first impression, if it was later in the track list I think people would be more ok with it

Was able to squeeze in a few.

🔥
  • Jonny Nash - Point of Entry [my god, I can't get enough of the MFM-related magic]
👍
  • jaimie branch - Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
  • Slowdive - everything is alive [they are top50 to me all time, but I've come to the realization that the perfect days are gone. Not saying this is a lackluster effort, as it has many wonderful moments. I even found the dreamy instrumental "prayer remembered" to be very enjoyable]
  • Spellling - SPELLLING & THE MYSTERY SCHOOL [a very enjoyable set of do-overs from Chrystia's past records. The version of "Always" presented here is similar to the one I experienced at her stop in Portland last year]
🤷‍♂️

  • Ashnikko - WEEDKILLER [I don't get Ashnikko, I never will. Some of the cringiest, hodgepodge production I've heard in an alt-pop album yet, and the pouty/shouted vocals are a turnoff. The closer with the Ethel Cain feature doesn't save this. Bottom 10]

RBF ALERT ⚠️

Just discovered this band  Sprain today and their new album The Lamb As Effigy or Three Hundred And Fifty XOXOXOS For A Spark Union With My Darling Divine (which dropped on Sept 1st). The eight tracks on this album span a 96-minute run time, with half of the tracks being over 10 minutes (and two tracks approaching 25 minutes). This album is experimental, it's noise rock, post-hardcore,.poat-punk, and slowcore? I'm not sure if I've listed every deserving genre tag (I'm still recovering from and running this album through my mind..). What a first listen and initial experience! 🤯 It's terrifying and gorgeous, complicated and intelligent, unpleasant and jaw-dropping. This surely won't be for everyone (honestly, this is probably for hardly anyone, lol), but it definitely scratched at itch for me and checked many boxes for me.

FFO: the only two I can think of right right now are Swans and Squid, but I feel there are a few more.

This thing is wild. A bit all over the genre map but...
