New Music Friday!

N&G forum used: OMG [insert 2024 April/May album] is dope bro!

It's not very effective...

🔥
  • Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee [it is a challenge, but a worthy 2hr challenge. Lo-fi pop reminding of many moments of Beach Boys, Broadcast, The Velvet Underground, and more! So much to return to]
  • Beth Gibbons - Lives Outgrown [welcome back, Beth]
  • Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To [GOES HARD. Thanks 4 the plug, @musicjunkiegreg 👊]
👍
  • DIIV - Frog in Boiling Water [others here seem to love this. I can see why, shoegaze is godtier for a good portion of the board. I like it, but not enough to push it into the upper tier from this year]
  • Kelly Moran - Moves in the Field
  • Jessica Pratt - Here in the Pitch [she is very talented, and has the right aura. I've heard this style before a number of times, but Jessica mostly wins me over here]
🤷‍♂️
  • Beyoncé - Cowboy Carter [this needed some trimming, the interludes are too frequent]
  • Coral Morphologic, Nick Leon - Projections of a Coral City (EP) [first release from Balmat I'm not crazy about]
  • Couch Slut - You Could Do It Tonight
  • Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft [a great one-two punch with "Chihiro" and "Birds of a Feather." Kinda cold on most of the rest]
  • Dua Lipa - Radical Optimism [false advertising, the album. Dua mentioned influences of Massive Attack and Primal Scream on this album. Tell me where specifically you hear these quoted influences on this record, because I am desperate to know. The back half is a near complete wash...what was Kevin Parker doing? I'm really worried that Future Nostalgia was hard carried by production god Stuart Price]
  • Mach Hommy - #RICHAXXHAITIAN
  • Fabiana Palladino - Fabiana Palladino
  • Shabaka - Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace [I have recognized this album's existence, and have listened to its contents. So, what do I win?]
  • Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us
  • WILLOW - empathogen [she def has talent and has a path in the art pop field, but maybe she needs to show a bit more for me to care. There's definitely SOMETHING here though]
👎
  • Amen Dunes - Death Jokes [peeps were right here]
  • Taylor Swift - The Tortured Poets Department [cringefest. Yet not the worst thing I've heard either...it is a little better than the majority of critics say. Really, the song "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is the most tone-deaf track title on here. I have every reason to be afraid...of being doxxed by Swifties on the world wide web]

Very grateful for a shorter list this week as my backlog folder got pretty clogged over the past few weeks (mostly with stuff not on any of my lists). Hoping I can get that zeroed out by mid-next week!

Former N&G AOTM artist Little Wings has a new one out this week:

Couldn't help but think of this scene when I saw that shoe.

A few im looking forward to tomorrow that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Also really excited for new Little Wings!

Man Man - Carrot On Strings
Eels - Eels Time!
Jesse Daniel - Countin the Miles
Strand of Oaks - Miracle Focus
Marina Allen - Eight Pointed Star
Mr Sam & The People People - Again! Again! (This one actually comes out on the 11th, not tomorrow)

I'm super intrigued by the new Strand of Oaks coming. There is a chillwave element to the singles, which is quite a pivot for Tim. I'm assuming the whole album will be shifting this direction. It was a bit jarring at first, but that last single is mad cool, and I see myself coming around.

I'm also looking forward to hearing this album (I don't think it's been mentioned):

Bathe Alone - I Don't Do Humidity

1) I didn't know about the Marias at all until recently and really love the new album

2) Charli XCX - Brat is about as fresh and exciting as pop can get right now. I've found great mainstream big pop albums this year, but it's also nice to have one that's just a straight shot of good, quick songs with no grandiose statement or excessive run time (although personally, I think Due Lipa did a similar thing with Radical Optimism)

3) Bonny Light Horseman have a new album out, and it's a double album. I feel they've only gotten more refined with each record, shame that they don't get a ton of attention
