New Music Friday!

Both of my best friend's parents growing up had one. His Mom's was the regular use one and his Dad's was the newer and slightly fancier one we rarely got to go in. Great memories of both.
One of my friends Dad’s had one that was his baby occasionally when he’d have too much to drink l. He would let us take it out for a spin. It was like driving a ballistic missile.

The new Faker Jim Monkey album is quite good. Much better than his last record that was more boring than bad. This new one feels like a return to form and one I look forward to revisiting when I can spend more absorbing all the sardonic wit.
I'm very torn with the new Feather June Musty. After two full listens, I can't help but feel like all the even tracks are kinda trash 🤷‍♂️ The odd tracks, especially 1, 5, and 7 are all damn good. FJM has featured on my AOTY lists with every album he's dropped. Will he make it this year or not?... lot's of listening still to ensue. Stay tuned ✌️

What are you even talking about?! The whole album is a masterpiece and one of his best!

I've never liked FJM at all. This new album was not on my listening list but I will add it. I do need more "👎" or "🤷‍♂️" entries for this month after all...

I've never really understood the unique hate for FJM. Sure his sardonic style rubbed some folks the wrong way originally, but he hasn't made an album or written like that in like 7 years. He doesn't even have a signature sound to hate on - he's flipped genres like 4 times since Honeybear. And even then a lot of it sounds like other indie rock and pop that people DO like.

So what's on your listening list today, then? Besides the newly added Funky Jake Mushy?
Just a few. I don't have large lists anymore; I've devoted (what was) extensive listening time towards furthering study in Japanese now. I'll probably get to around ~225 releases listened to this year.

Like with you, this will be my last list to listen to before arranging my faves (only a top25 this year):
  • Defeated Sanity - Chronicles of Lunacy
  • Father John Misty - Mahashmashana
  • Boldy James, Harry Fraud - The Bricktionary
  • Kendrick Lamar - GNX
  • Amber Mark - Loosies (EP)
  • Opeth - The Last Will and Testament

His best albums were the one's where he "rubbed some folks the wrong way" 👍

225 is still impressive this year (I know we share similar sentiments on the year as a whole as far as quality of new releases..)

Yup, last release day for me. What a banger of a final day tho!

Good list for today! Looking forward to your thoughts and upcoming AOTY list!

I gave it a second listen while on my morning walk and I enjoyed it more the second time through. It’s hard to say where it will rank overall in his discography a year or two from now but as of this morning I enjoyed it all the way through and I am sure like his previous albums it will probably grow further the more I play it.

I have a feeling if this came out in September instead of now it would probably be a top 5 contender for me.

Glad it's a grower for ya!

Why can it not be a Top5 contender?

Me neither. His persona really rubbed some the wrong way and it’s funny to me because like I know if the music was presented without the persona many of his detractors would love him. He is a modern day Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, or Warren Zevon [ducks].

But because he plays up iconoclast persona and is honest about it being a schtick opposed to playing coy. It drives certain people nuts.

He is really funny in a really thoughtful way, what’s to hate?
