No Weeknd?

Have y’all listened to his first three tapes

Echoes of Silence

Those are all masterpieces to me, everything since has been bleh
I love Trilogy and it’s why I still follow him even though I wasn’t super impressed again until Dawn FM which I absolutely loved. Went back to listen to the middle stuff as a result and it’s okay.

I prefer The Weeknd songs where he sings about cocaine and fucking in the style of Michael Jackson… which is basically all of them, right?

I guess I’m a fan.
Its basically ALL OF THEM, but there was a distinct change in style which made it feel like he got hooked by marketing execs at some fancy label and they transformed him into Pop Superstar Weeknd as opposed to the Dark Broody R&B/Neo-Soul Weeknd which I was obsessed with. Everything started going downhill when he had that boost in popularity for his song on the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack.

Your opinion is your opinion but personally I strongly disagree. I love Trilogy Weeknd but it would be disingenuous for him to be one of the biggest popstars on the planet and still be trying to make music where he plays up being the dark and mysterious R&B up-and-comer. It's the same reason Arctic Monkeys aren't still making variations of "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor." Besides after relistening to Kiss Land the other day it feels like he was starting to run out of ideas he could do with that sound (and I don't even mind that album). Going "pop" probably saved his career.

Also he has actually revived his older style somewhat on recent projects. My Dear Melancholy, certain songs on After Hours, even the soundtrack for The Idol (yes really). It's fine if you're not a fan anymore but I don't think the quality of his music has declined at all. He's just a different kind of artist now and that's fine.
