I've seen a lot of hype (both on N&G and on other sites) for the new  Spiritbox album, Tsunami Sea (dropped March 7th). So I, somewhat reluctantly, decided to check it out. The "somewhat reluctantly" is my tendency to steer away from the metalcore scene, as it's not a subgenre I'm particularly fond of. And Tsunami Sea landed about where I expected. It was decent. There were some excellent moments (e.g. opening track 'Fata Morgana' was an absolute beast of a track - best on the album by far, and Courtney LaPlante's vocals were pretty damn good across the record). There were, for me, anyway, some lows on this album, too, but those are likely just a personal preference/taste issue. Don't wanna yuck on anyone's yums here. This is a solid 7 outta 10 album for me, but I can see why a lot of folks are hyping this one up a lot more. I know @Piratenovelist gave this one a 9.5 outta 10 and is considering it aoty material. So what about this album are y'all loving?

Everyone here hears music different and has their preferences. For me I listen to songs multiple ways and a major factor is how I feel during them. I have Synesthesia so I get to feel things, literally sometimes, with music. It's just hitting that just right itch me. Sometimes I will know if I like a whole album from the get go. It's hard for me to describe, but I think it's the vocal quality and some, at least for me, intangibles that my brain likes I guess is the easiest way to describe it.

You aren't yucking anything to be honest! If anything I love to hear why something does or doesn't work for someone because it gives me better perspective on music. It helps me to hear the songs in a different way. For me even if I do put 9.5, there could still be lul moments or moments I don't like in an album. Heck for my (this is all albums list) 10/10 albums often do have those moments that don't work for me.

The beautiful thing about music (and all art).

Same. The feelings that music evokes play a huge role in where an album lands come the year end aoty list.

That's very interesting!

Same. If those specific boxes get checked right away, it's usually a sure thing that I will be positively affected by the rest of the album, too.

Same, again. That's why I love discussing music with everyone here 🙌

Thanks for sharing, @Piratenovelist !

This album is bad ass! How does it compare to their other albums? I haven't listened to a ton other than WRIGGLE.
My thoughts:

One other thing I forgot to add. The final track of any album or Ep I weight the heaviest with "scrutiny". I love album closers the most so if that endcap blows me away I will more than likely add more to a score if say the middle of the project wanes my interest.
Discussing the strength of the album bookends reminded me of my AOTY blog post from last year, and in it I had noted what makes a "10 out of 10" album for me. I listed 10 criteria that I focus on:

Production Quality
Strength of opening and closing tracks
Vocal performance
Instrumental songwriting and performance
Relistenability

Lyrics/Lyrical songwriting
Tracklist order and flow
Boundary pushing

Intellectualism and relevance
Overarching theme(s)

GREEN = strongly weighs into
BLUE = moderately to strongly weighs into
PURPLE = lightly to moderately weighs into

I'm curious which of these you put more or less weight on? I'm also curious if there are any other criteria I didn't list that any of you focus on?

My thoughts:

🔥Based last place selection for Dead Channel Sky 🔥

This is somewhere between "👎" and "🤷‍♂️" after having listened once at home and twice at work. Far too many boring tracks. Not excited for the live show if it is ~75% this material.

You hit on basically everything I look at! Though I would add green to lyrics as well. Being that I am bigger and bigger into Zevon I am more and more into lyrical quality. Though I have given 10/10 without that weighing into my considerations.

Wow, feels like I have a twin out there 🤔😃

As in Warren Zevon? Also, what's the significance of Zevon as opposed to any other lyricist? Is he your benchmark for lyrical prowess? Or was he just given as one example? Just curious as there are many amazing lyricists out there..

I gave Zevon as an example off the top of my head! I love so many other lyric writers I just used Zevon as my first example off the top of my head!
